Oil leak after Rocker Cover Gasket change

    Hi,

I had my rocker cover gasket replaced today after taking my D2a TD5 to a dealer to correct some minor oil seepage (under statutory warranty).

When I got home tonight and parked on the driveway - which slopes downward slightly - I noticed a puddle of fresh oil (about 20cm wide) under the front left side of the engine (apparently from somewhere above the panhard rod) when I went out a couple of hours later. Upon inspection I can't see where the oil is coming from (even checked the rocker plug under acoustic shield, but seems well-sealed), so I thought it might be some sort of overflow or even some leftover oil from the refill that may have spilled somewhere.

The oil dipstick says the oil level is 'full', so does the TD5 engine have some sort of overflow (apologies if this is a stupid question), or should I be taking it back to the dealer?

We're off on a 2000km road trip on Sat morning, so would appreciate anyone's thoughts.

I think it would be best to take it back for them to check it out if you can't find where it's come from.

A puddle that big is not just spilt oil from the job & there's no overflow system as such (there is a breather but it's just for fumes).

Yep take it back. They've done a good job to mess that up. It doesnt get much easier than changing that!

    Thanks for the advice.

I took it back to the dealer first thing this morning as I couldn't wait another day to call and chat about what the problem might be, given our impending trip.

    Oil Filter?

Did you check if your oil filter was snug tight.

I've driven out of a Land Rover dealership with it spinning loose as a result of a regular service. The filter is at the front slightly to the left.

Obviously had the apprentice on mine that day.

Will be interesting to see what the dealership has to say.

    Regards
    Andrew

    Spot on Hay Ewe!

Just heard back from the dealer and it turns out it was one of the power steering hoses that developed a small hole due to previous chafing and probably being bumped during yesterday's repair. It was leaking from somewhere around the same place as yours, Hey Ewe, but I couldn't see exactly where last night.

I was sure it was engine oil that had leaked last night, but since it was night time it was difficult to discern the colour of the fluid.

It's now fixed, although the dealer charged for the work. That said, they charged the dealer I bought the car from as it's still under statutory warranty, so no skin off my nose (the more that goes wrong and gets fixed under warranty the better!).

At least now we can relax ahead of our road trip starting tomorrow...

    Thanks all for your input!
