Thread: Noisy transfercase

I had a TDI D1 for 6 years and the transfer case would sing along over 50kms/h, never failed though. Depends how big the chunks are on the magnet. Might need new oil. 80w90 might help to save some money!

magnet was fury but no big chunks

Hi My d2, 2001, 200k km was making a decent opera singing whine, and although not a fix i added a can of liqui moly lube to the case. It was a dramatic improvement, i have done over 10k now and it is still a lot ,lot quieter. I did email the german company first and asked them if it was of and they said it was. I realise one day that i will have to do something, but that day is no longer close enough to hear.

Transfer gear whine is pretty normal for discos. Have had 2 now and both the same. Gear whine is acceptable, if it is growly rough noise then your bearings may need attention.

first time disco2 owner , not a fan yet.

It depends what you are used to. If you have driven a (say Japanese) 4WD with a chain drive transfer then an LT230 will always appear rough and whiny with clunks on power reversal.
I had a colleague who had 2 D2 transfer cases under warranty and both were no "improvement".
This is part of the joy of a gear driven transfer.
"Furry" does not really matter as there is always a bit of wear on the gears.
"Chunky" is a problem.
wait until you have it in low range and stop and it rocks backwards and forwards on the gears kachunk, kachunk , Kachunk.

I ended up driving it for another 2 months waiting for the repairer and i was told it was close to destroying itself.
So it depends if its a noisy trany or the bearings are trying to get out.
