    D2a Td5 good buy?

Looking at a D2a, Td5, auto, 200k, fully serviced, seems clean.

Is that a good buy at 20k?

    It it too many k's

I would imagine it has most of the dramas sorted, but have not seen the service history yet to verify, I am going to check it out next week!

The high k's is a bit of a concern for me but if it has been serviced as the seller says I can't see it being too much of a problem.

    Thoughts?

I suspect that it would be better for less however you are going to struggle to get less ks for less money.

    5 or 7 seater?
base model, S, SE, HSE ?
    private or dealer sale?

Probably at the high end of the scale for an "S" or below but about right for an SE or above.

Save some extra cash for the inevitable fixes that will come to light after you've bought it!!!!

    Cheers

Seems a touch high. 6 months ago I paid 20k including on road from a dealer for a 2003 d2a:
    170000
    manual
    ACE
Very clean and tidy inside and underneath
Some you beaut stereo video system
Had it checked by ritters and they only had a few minor things
    Tyres good, unused spare

I'd be offering a lot less. Dealers are hurting at the moment and will be eager to move it. Rmember they probably paid around $12k as a trade in, if that...

    Thanks,
I have not actually viewed it yet, so will bear that in mind when I do.
I am hoping to get down there early next week so we will see what happens.
I have no intention of paying the asking price, I guess it all depends on how negotiable that is!

The easiest way to tell if it's a base model is by the fact that it wont have the black wheel arch moulds. (unless of course they've been added later).

The "S" model in the D2a had seven seats so it is unlikely to be an "S". The SE should have leather (I think) in the D2a so I doubt that it's an SE.

To be honest, 20k is no bargain if it's a base model. You might be able to do a bit better. The history of these things is so incredibly important that I would advise only buying one if you can have a good discussion with the previous owner. For this reason I reckon you're better off buying privately. A stamped log book really means very little if you don't have the service invoices to document what's been done. Talking to the owner also gives a good indication of how the car has been cared for generally. Many cars can be detailed or dressed up to make them appear better than what they actually are. There are many known issues (search AULRO) that you can specifically ask about if talking to the previous owner. This could save you $ in later repairs or save you $ by ability to negotiate a lower price if things haven't yet been done. (such as 3 amigo's and injector harness which WILL need doing at some stage even on the D2a)

I bought my D2a "S" with 140,000km privately in 2009 for $13,500. It had all Landrover Service receipts. It needed new front shocks and tyres for roadworthy so all up it cost me $15,000. I know it is hard to come by them for this sort of money but if you take your time you might get a better buy if you can afford to wait.

    Good luck
    Martin

I think this is a very good point and LandRover need to hang their head in shame for allowing this to happen.

So I managed to get down to look at it this afternoon, and I was a bit disappointed.
It had obviously been cleaned up for the sale, but there was some staining on the door cards and a few dings.
The service history was not as complete as I would have liked, and the engine bay was spotless (obviously steam cleaned), I lifted the battery cover to check the real condition and it was filthy with corrosion on both battery terminals (service history?).
On the test drive it felt a bit sluggish and had a bit of vibration, but at idle in gear it was as rough as my current TDI which has some heavy breating issues (is this normal??).
So the hunt continues, I am in no rush really, but would have liked to get a new vehicle before we head off to Birdsville in August, I guess I will have to do a bit of maintenence on the old Disco.
    Thanks for all the advice!!
