How full(dirty) is your oil Rotor?

    G'day all,
I did a oil and rotor(spinner) change on friday, 7.5k for the oil and 15k for the rotor,I do many short trips so I dropped it from 10k,anyway,I thought to myself, how much crap is in the spinner?.So I weighed a new genuine LR one on my digital scales in the shed,..200g on the knocker, did the oil ,put the new spinner in and weighed the used one(also genuine).....225g?,is that all,. I thought,25 grams of poo for all that city driving? .Well, being a young (ish) single bloke on a friday night,I decided to cut the spinner apart to have a look .At first it looked like there was almost nothing inside except black stain on the outer wall, then a closer look revealed a 2mm wall of quite hard gunk on the wall!.Now being the tight-a@se I am ,I wondered how thick could you let the deposit build upon the wall before it becomes a problem?,so I went to the Mann_Hummel site who also make the "Provent" (I didn't know that),and there was one (on page 3) with about a 20mm solid block of deposit

Sooooo....my question is,do I leave it in for another 15k and save $30.00,(thats a freight car or turnout for the layout) or not??,seems a waste if it has heaps more capacity?I'd be interested to see what others find in theirs?...or maybe I should get a life
    Cheers Gregghttp://www.mann-hummel.com/diesel-em...BIRBV_ayrv.pdf

I'd say that the filter can hold a lot more but you have to remember that your brand new oil will be coming in contact with that scum in the centrifugal filter.

I'd like one of the FM025 or FM060 to through on my TDi.

I cut one of mine open after 10K and found only a very thin film, so thereafter changed it at 20K.

Same with me, about 10 yrs ago I cut one open. After seeing stuff all muck in it, I change the oil every 10k and the centrifugal thing gets swapped out every 20k.

Thanks for posting the pics 3-Gees....very interesting. Mine is due in 3000km for its 90000km service. Has been fully serviced since new so I will cut mine open to and check it out.

Out of interest how many km has yours done 3-Gees so I can make a sludge comparison.

We use this type of spinner where i work on large diesels.
The unit is about the size of a volley ball, the outer bowl of the filter is removable. We line the inside of the bowl with paper this lets you get the gunk out nice and easy usually it is 10mm or so thick.
The small particles that are collected are definitely engine wreckers.
Be happy that the filter works so well and change them as recommended.
Your photos look pretty clean really for 15k of use.

    G'day all,
My pleasure for the pics ,actually it had done nearly 20k of about 75% was city driving.I'm going to leave it in for 25-30k next time and see what it's like.Apart from a trip down south, all of those km's were on my own Bio-diesel, which has no sulphur and produces much less soot than Dino" diesel .The Mann site had some interesting pics and info,I don't think to many "stock" engines come with spinners,it's good to know those little particles are being caught!

    Cheers Gregg
