    D2 Heart transplant

Im about to swap the 4.0 in my D2 that died by overheating about a month ago.

I have the exchange motor from All 4x4, thanks Leigh and Chris.

I have an engine crane that I borrowed from my BIL.

I plan to do the whole thing by myself, are there any obvious things I should look out for that arent in the RAVE disc?

I am mostly concerned about reconnecting the transmission, I have only done manuals gearboxes before. Will the fluid run out when the torque convertor is unbolted?

Is it a good idea to take out the radiator?

Regarding the torque convertor, make sure that you undo all of the bolts on the flex plate and use wire or large cable ties to keep the convertor inside the bellhousing otherwise yes you will lose a large amount of fluid. Use a jack under the bellhousing when you undo the bellhousing bolts and again when you do them back up. No a real lot different from doing a manual box.

I have tried with no luck to undo the bolts holding on the torque convertor because I cannot look in the little hole while Im turning the engine by hand. My 8 yo boy was unable to help either.

I would be grateful for any assistance, as I have no mates.

Isn't there a removable plate that covers the bottom of the bellhousing which you can get to?

Also, when you reinstall, fit the torque converter to the gearbox so that it sits all the way down. Don't fit it to the flex plate and then try to butt it up otherwise the gearbox will get damaged during the fitting.
    Cheers

Removing the radiator is a very good idea. They're a bugger to get out, but the weight of an engine can very easily damage the fins form the slightest nudge. Removing the radiator also leaves a whole a lot of room to see what's going on as well.

Theres an inspection hole to undo 4 bolts that hold the torque convertor to the flex plate. The RAVE doesnt say remove the torque convertor so I wasnt going to.

I did end up removing the rad, as you suggested, I didnt want to ding it.

If it is anything like my old holden torque converter it should engage on the transmission output around three times when you fit it.

The first time I did it I only pushed the torque converter on and it did not fully engage, needless to say, once all bolted up it was stuck in there and would not turn over at all.

Do you still need a hand James? I live at Kurri and have plenty of tools. Let me know. I didn't notice your location until today.
