D2 Underbody oil - from tranny?

    Hi all,

have just discovered I have splatters of oil under the rear of my D2. Even as far back as on the muffler. Smells like hot oil when I stop also.

I'm guessing (wildly) that I have a leak in the tranny (oh gawd!!) and probably need to sort that out asap!

I'm a noob at driveline stuff... can anyone tell me how to check the transmission / diff fluid levels quickly and easily in my D2 (2001). If they're are down, how do I top up? It won't be a case of tip it in from the top like the engine I'm assuming? A squeeze hose or something? Like I said.. I'm a noob at gearboxes and trannies!

I have to drive it this weekend for about 4-500Km (highway). So hoping I can easy my worry a little by inspecting things.

    Cheers

    Wil

It appears (on closer investigation) that the oil is coming from the transfer box somewhere.. hard to say where though. Pretty oily.

    From front.

    From rear.

Why is there an open threaded hole in my auto gearbox??

The open threaded hole is there to lock the crank, and should only be plugged when wading.

I also recently had a leak from my transfer case, but it turned out only to be the inspection plate, which received some new sealant from the dealer and hasn't leaked since.

Probably best to give it a good wipe down and have a look afterwards to see where exactly the oil might be coming from.

I've just given it a quick wipe down and also checked the drain plug. I could easily turn this at least twice. How tight is safe on these? I would assume tight like a spanner tightened bolt would be safe, but figured I'd ask.

I don't know if this helps, but the output shaft has been known to wear the alloy of the transfer case. MR do a steel bush insert around the shaft to remedy the problem.

It's definitely leaking from the top somewhere. I just took her over to a mechanic who kindly had a look from under a lift and checked the transfer box oil (I couldn't undo the filler - admittedly I was lying under it on the side of the road.) There's still oil in there! That's a relief! :-)

I'lll keep an eye on the level and how much is trying coat the muffler and do something to fix it properly later! Looks like I'll have to pull it out no matter what. Doh!

    Thanks for your input guys!

    one more question...

In my RAVE manuals the transfer box drain plug is pictured as a hex head bolt of some sort, presumable with a washer.

As you can see (kind of) in the pic below, my drain plug is a 1/2" drive screw in plug, like the filler plug, or the diff drain plugs. Given that I found it very loose it leads me to ask... IS this the wrong plug?

There are a couple of funny looking bolts on the bottom cover plate, they look like bolts with a nut screwed onto them. Must be a repair job, maybe from a broken off bolt. I'd say someone's been messing around down there so it wouldn't surprise me if the drain plug was wrong. lol.

    Cheers

According to Urban Panzers site both the fill and drain are 1/2" drive like the diff drain plugs.

www.discovery2.co.uk / Transfer Box Oil change

How tight? Filler plug should be 25Nm (18ft/lb), and Drain plug 30Nm (25ft/lb)

They are meant to have loctite 290 applied before refitting. Perhaps this was omitted?

    cheers
