ABS Sensor replacement?

On the issue of cleaning, how much grease if any should be in there on the reluctor ring. I had the sensor out the day of my first post. There was grease on the sensor and on the ring, looked clean at that time, couldn't see any metal, unless it was very small. I will go back to it and clean the ring as suggested by Austral LR with a small paint brush through the hole and brake/elec cleaner on the sensor.

I checked the resistance at the plug end tonight and it's within the required range, I guess that means the sensor is okay and it just needs a clean or the wheel bearing is gone (could not find any movement in the hub with the wheel on jacked up or with the wheel and brake rotor off..??

I had a fault code saying 'noisy/interrupted signal'. This was due to squaking noise produced by a brake pad clip pushed against a disc rotor. Replaced the pads with LR genuine pads and the problem was solved...

Have you done any work on your brakes recently?

If its got bad output I would try what Blknight said, give it a clean. They are magnetic and get swarf on them.

That's not true, I've replace 2 sensors on mine and never touched the hub, one rear and one front, I have also had the sensors out quite a few times making sure they are clean.

Never had any problems with the plugs on mine and as for the newer ABS sensors with no plug, they have as many 3 amigo problems as the early models have.

Brake squeal is the biggest issue with the 3 amigoes.

Break squeal is a result of mechanical vibration of the brake pad. There is a paste in form of something like rubber (maybe silicon?), which you apply on the rear side of the brake pads and let it dry. This layer doesn't allow the pad to vibrate in the caliper. The genuine LR pads have a layer of something similar to rubber on rear face already...

I bought my plug in, short lead, original style ABS sensor from Paddock Spares in the UK for the princely sum of 48 pounds, or about AUS $74. Delivered to my letter box, took 2 weeks, but for $74, who cares.

Identified the faulty sensor using Pedros method, replaced it, then took it to a local Landrover mechanic here in Cairns who cleared the fault for $45. Unfortunately he ceased trading yesterday to try retirement, I sure hope somebody takes over.

Did not have to remove the hub to replace sensor, but it was a bit of a squeeze to make sure all was were it should be.

Thanks Freightdog, I was hoping that was the case, it had to be easy to change a sensor without removing the hub surely!!!!!!!. Cheers.

I will probably get a sensor from the UK, but I'm not sure its my problem even though it was tested faulty????. I have checked it's operation with a multi meter rolling the car on the floor and it works fine and is within the accepted resistance range?. Hub bearing seem okay also?
Been driving the car a bit and the lights have stayed away for now..:angel:

How do you replace the sensor without having to take the hub off? Can you "clean" the sensor without taking the hub off?

Just take the wheel off, the caliper off and then the brake rotor off and it is all just sitting there. The rotor sits on the hub, but the hub doesn't need to come off. 1 alan key to undo the bolt that holds the sensor in. You can pull the sensor out and clean it. Also, look through the hole and check the ABS ring is also clean.

Thanks will try this out this coming weekend. The three amigo's are driving me mad. Had them done with LR last time (2 yrs ago) and it cost me $2100 and I'm damn sure it was not worth the money and frustration.
