I think I will rather fit 4:1 diff ratios. Low and high range will benifit.

Yes using the Defender box will give you almost the same change (in Hi ratio) as changing to 4.1:1 diff ratios (16.5% Def Vs 15.8% diff) but changing the diffs will give you the benefit in low ratio where the Defender ratios are the same as your current DII low ratio.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Hi Riceburner,
Fit the 1.4 ratio and get a white marker, strip the speedo and mark the speedo for the correct speed.
Or drink less beer and drive by memory.

The difference will be about 450RPM . I have fitted a Def case gear set to one and it was altered from 2250Rpm to 2700Rpm at 100km/h. (245/75/16 tyres)

IMO using 265/75/16 I would just check the engine management etc for issues, the Td5 will quite happily push these tyres IF the thing is running right and not overloaded with winches/roofracks/accessories etc etc.

MAybe a stage 1 ECU chip would be a better option for all round use? What year of manufacture is your D2?

Correct, I hadn't looked at the 2nd page of this thread, this was my next suggestion but I see Diana has got there already I would definately think about this option, with a chip of course

If your speed is calculated purely based on wheel speed, why will changing the t-case ratio matter then?

As a last resort, if you fit a pre-puma t-case, then you can fit a disco 1 Q-case drive gear to the defender box, defender(?) speedo cable, and a 4" hole saw will give you a nice hole where the disco 2 speedo was to mount a defender speedo (......just kidding before anyone says anything)
BTW Ben, did you know the Puma Defenders use a Disco transfer ratio???
