This vehicle hasnt ever been dunked in mud and water to alternator level prior to me getting hold of it - yet has had (now) 2 alternators...

1 whilst under warranty - 24,000km... Rectifier failure
And now this one at 137,000km... Rectifier failure...

Unit is completely clear of mud, grit and other foreign bodies...

Sourced a new unit (rectifier, bearings, Brushes) for $56.00 and will be putting it into the unit when it arrives...

I was going to suggest looking at the rectifier first. Took my alternator out and took it to the auto leccy, it was only$150 inc labour, to replace the regulator. Much cheaper than the whole alternator.

Wish I'd known about the oil hose though. Mine didn't look to be in strife, but bugger of a job getting the alternator in and out.

I did 2 recos on my D1 V8 alt from a reputable repair place - first failed inside 10k, second inside another 10k...now go new.

Sounds like that might be my oil leak, alternator was replaced a while back proberly due to oil leaking onto the commutator and destroying the brushes? O rings were replaced but not the feed hose? Still have a leak in that area, the alternator still has oil all around it. Think it might be worth replacing the hose, before I kill it again! JC the part no you quoted is that the one I need for a 2002 TD5 Disco? Where is the best place to get one, can it be done with the alternator in situ

I ordered one yesterday and it was delivered today talk about great service from Les Richmond Automotive, you need part#YKL100120.

I'm about to go and change it over, waiting for the motor to cool. I don't think it can be done in situ, mine started leaking after I replaced the head must of disrupted it when I moved the alternator bracket. I'm hoping I've got the correct size drain tube so I can do that as well.

If its not a rude question how much? If I have to I will pull the altenator out, not looking forward to that. But if I can stop the oil leak destroying another alternator? Will be worth it.

Is it posible to undo the 4 bolts and remove the vac. pump with the hose attached?
Should be room if the fan,shroud and belt are removed.
I've done my pump with out removing the alt..
