Does it have "DIFFLOCK" on the knob with two gate patterns?

May be a seized cable or linkage depending on which assembly you have.
It will only shift across from the neutral position also. Trannie needs to be in neutral also.

Not aware of any common issues with it as it's a fairly straight forward assembly. Disconnect it from the transfer case and manually try both to see what sticks.

Not so... you can engage the difflock from any position H-N-L.

but it is a pretty simple cable, so might be gummed up if it hasn't been used much.

"hasnt been used much " is the key. The external workings ( cable etc.) can rust or gunk up and bingo! wont go across the gate. I dont know how much force you could use without busting a link -- I did use a bit on the old D1 and she went over after spraying everything underneath (never been off road) and let it soak for a day. After that I regularly (1-2 mths) find some rough stuff and go for a burn going through all the ranges , ABS, DC and TC, so far so good.

Are you sure it's not just a 'difflock' knob? On a H-L lever?
