Did you have any noise before that? Like a clattering noise more so with aircon on from the multi V pulley hitting the balancer. ???
pulling up at the lights the other day and bang/crunch with a little smoke!
turns out the balancer has snapped off and smashed the fan.
what causes this?

no warning noises, just a bang and a crunch!
and now the wallet going to get a big crunch.

Delamination of the outer to inner ring
My D2 did it at 78,000km...
Unless the radiator is damaged its only a fan and balancer.
Depending on age its a good opportunity to replace the radiator too, it will need it by now.
Toombie - is that an oil leak contamination issue that causes the delamination..is there a difference between TD5 and V8 set up in terms of life of the balancer that you know of...my V8 has done 180k and wondering if it should be a maintenance item before it causes a problem?
Cheers
mine went recently and think combination of seal behind (timing cover) leaking oil onto it and the idiler pulley ceasing killed it off.
not a nice sound when it happened but all good now.![]()
Is this issue only effecting the earlier models or can I expect my 04 td5 to go bang eventually as well?
Regards
Robbo
the balancers dont need oil on them to delaminate, on average that just hastens the process. you should be doing a check of the balancer by leavering it whenever you do the oil..
on average the basic check takes about a minute to do and if thats a bit sus you need a further 10 to remove the belt and check it out properly.
IME most balancers that dont cop oil contamination make 150K Km before they get to the "maybe you need to change that" stage. Driving style and accessory load plays a big part in their life expectancy and (assuming the other parts havent been replaced as a repair item) I replace them regardless at the 160K interval for a tdi (2x timing belts) 200K for the Td5 (with the radiator + engine mounts) and I havent had to replace one on a v8 that was "due" as part of a service. (lets be fair here I do most of my work on the diesel stuff)
