I leant my sister my SSS Datsun once, a heater hose blow and the temp needle went into the red. So she drove it 40ks home. The car drove so much better with the new motor after that.
Please let us know the out come of your Disco.
The oil pressure switch can fail and cause the low pressure light to not operate, so may not have been working for some time. I made an alarm for mine that sounded if the switch didn't indicate low pressure at startup to make sure I was warned if the switch became faulty to prevent inadvertantly running the engine without oil pressure due to some other fault.
The engines are rebuildable, I fitted one to my discoII td5 last year, cost of engine 6.5k I fitted it myself. It sounds like you have bottom end damage caused by lack of oil flow, big end and possibly main bearings and crank is probably scored to. Look around and you,ll find that there are people who rebuild them.

DM,
Your engine is cactus forget rebuilding its too expensive :o Buy a secondhand engine from the wreckers. There are plenty of low k engines around from vehicles that came to an untimely end. Try TRS in Adelaide they have about 100 d2s out the back of there yard.Let us know what they want for a second hand engine with around 100,000 ks. Before you fit it make sure the wiring harness has been upgraded so oil doesnt get into your computer and check the oil pickup in the sump is not loose. Secondhand motors should come with a waranty.:)
