I leant my sister my SSS Datsun once, a heater hose blow and the temp needle went into the red. So she drove it 40ks home. The car drove so much better with the new motor after that.

The oil pressure switch can fail and cause the low pressure light to not operate, so may not have been working for some time. I made an alarm for mine that sounded if the switch didn't indicate low pressure at startup to make sure I was warned if the switch became faulty to prevent inadvertantly running the engine without oil pressure due to some other fault.

    I have a 99 series II TD5

Recently it developed a nasty oil leak. I was away interstate and so my wife may not have noticed the problem.

One evening all hell broke loose and she told me that smoke and steam were pouring out and as a result she had get my son to meet her with 4lt of oil so that she drive the vehicle home.

I returned home and found that the oil filter was hanging on by a thread - hence the oil leak.

Seemingly the oil light had not come on until the whole smoke and steam incident.

I fitted a new filter and filled the sump with oil.

    All appeared good.

Then after a few KM's there was a knocking noise....the knocking got worse and then went away.

I though it may have been a lifter or injector.

The noise re appeared and after a few KM's more got much worse and then the vehicle simply stopped.

I have towed the vehicle home and there it rests.

My mechanic said "sounds like a ceased motor - they can't be rebuilt - buy a good secondhand motor" and then gave me a number which I assumed was his mobile number - but was actually the quote !!

If anyone out there has any clues as to how to assess whether the TD5 is dead - I'd be very grateful.

The starter will not turn - and I have not tried moving the car in gear.
The engines are rebuildable, I fitted one to my discoII td5 last year, cost of engine 6.5k I fitted it myself. It sounds like you have bottom end damage caused by lack of oil flow, big end and possibly main bearings and crank is probably scored to. Look around and you,ll find that there are people who rebuild them.

    Its Cactus

    DM,

Your engine is cactus forget rebuilding its too expensive Buy a secondhand engine from the wreckers. There are plenty of low k engines around from vehicles that came to an untimely end. Try TRS in Adelaide they have about 100 d2s out the back of there yard.Let us know what they want for a second hand engine with around 100,000 ks. Before you fit it make sure the wiring harness has been upgraded so oil doesnt get into your computer and check the oil pickup in the sump is not loose. Secondhand motors should come with a waranty.

    Mike
