    If it were me, I'd be replacing the front Double Cardan now. Having had one fail whilst driving (luckily no catastrophic damage as I've seen others suffer) I simply wouldn't take the chance. They really aren't that dear compared to the damge they can do if they break. Just for your info, my first one only made a noise for about 10 seconds before it broke! It was on the Parramatta Rd in Sydney during peak hour .

    Using a very basic and possibly wrong way of calculating it I came up with these numbers;

    Petrol $600 divided by $1.35 per litre works out at about 440 litres.

    Diesel $240 divided by $1.20 per litre works out at roughly 200 litres for the same mileage going on what the average cost of fuel is and more to the point the average gap I have sen between diesel and petrol of about 15 cents per litre.

    Round here right now diesel and a reasonable octane petrol are in fact very similar in cost.

    All I can say is you must have had one very very unhealthy V8 if it was using over double the fuel of what a diesel is on the same roads and using similar vehicles.

    On a good week I get about 550 to 570 ks per tank and on a bad week with lots of start stop driving down around 490 to 510 ks.

    Right now I need a new MAF and I'm getting roughly 450 ks.

    I have seen 600 ks a couple of times but that was all highway driving and when the D2a was in a good fresh state of tune with new plugs and air filter etc.

    I should mention that I am running taller tyres so in fact the mileage is about 6% better then what is shown on the speedo.

    Mate, I had one very healthy V8 - It was 290kw, Supercharged, Stroked to 5.0Litre running 35's - In urban stop go traffic it was 28l/100km at best... On the highway... Mid 13's

    Reading this and ticking off things done to the 00disco2.
    Yep done them
    plus brake light switch at 200k

    easy,unplug.twist.remove.replace.plug in lead.finished.
    total time...half a tinnie.
    about the only thing I found to be simpler than disco1.
    one thing with lr is you get to be on a first name basis with your parts supplier.

    Well that explains why your fuel useage was so high compared to a TD5, but its not exactly what could be called the average fuel useage for a 4L engined Disco 2 compared to an average TD5 powered Disco either is it Tombie.

    Sounds like it would have been fun to drive though...

    I have just got myself a 2000 D2 td5 with 127,000 km after owning a v8. Love the fuel economy!

    From my research, it sounds like you are checking all the boxes,

    BUT,

    I am a little concerned re the loss of coolant!

    Two weeks after getting mine i noticed my coolant level down a bit, then later noticed a slight leak coming from the radiator. Of course this happened when i was 800km from home!!

    Was under statutory warranty, so went to get it looked at by the local landrover specialist (free plug for Whyatts Automotive in Geraldton, W.A. they are on the ball!!).

    They proceeded to give me the extra bad news saying they were positive the head gasket was on its way which is why the radiator started leaking!!!!! They even guaranteed this by stating that if they were wrong, they would not charge for labour for the head gasket and just around $500 for parts!!

    A little history on this vehicle is that it was a one owner, serviced its entire life by Barbagallo's in Perth and i had the ECU upgraded by the dealers mechanic the day i picked it up and 300km before i noticed the leak. It never got hot and i had pushed it a few times to check the difference from the ECU.

    Lots of arguements later with the dealer over whether it was the head gasket or not and what they would pay for considering it was now 'upgraded' (even if it was by their mechanic) and they agreed to cover 3/4 the cost of a radiator and head gasket repair.

    Whyatts pulled the head off in my presence, and how bout that, could easily see where the bloody thing HAD started leaking!!! Also the exhaust manifold was warped and slighty leaking and heat shield bracket over manifold was cracked (found the annoying rattle!).

    So now it is all done and luckily for me at the right time that it only cost me a fraction of the normal cost due to statutory warranty.

    I am not diagnosing yours as definitely leaking, BUT, i do recommend getting it checked and finding out where that coolant is going so you don't chance a catastrophic failure at the worst time!!

    I bought my car and paid top dollar for it as it had an impeccable service history and had clearly been looked after by the previous owners, and it still happened, and at lower kms than yours!!

    Fingers crossed yours is good.

    Coolant loss seems fixed

    I had a chance to crawl underneath the other day after I noticed a puddle on the ground after I had it parked near work (its usually parked in a dirt carport at home).
    I had replaced all coolant hoses a few months ago and I found two leaks from hose clamps (water pump outlet and thermostat housing) which were slightly loose. I ended up taking the fan and shroud off and tightening every clamp on every hose and haven't lost any coolant since, so I hope I've got that one. I guess I must have been a bit nancy when doing the clamps up that time before (it was midnight before a trip!).
    I keep an eye on coolant because I had one of those skinny hard plastic hoses break about a year ago. Lost all coolant to the degree that the engine started to miss, but no pressuring of cooling system yet!

    After starting this thread had a new fault has developed, dammit.

    The light has gone in the dash clock!

    thanks for everyones feedback, although I think the result is I'm going to become a mechanical hyperchondriac

    Is this still an issue with D2a? I though it was only the early rigs which suffered the missing lock tight? Same with 3 omigos.

    I checked my D2a oil pump bolt at 150,000kms and it was tight and had loctite on it.
    I had the amigoes at 120,000km which turned out to be 2 problems - RHF wheel sensor and the shuttle valve problem which was fixed with the 'option B' rewire.

    Oil leak behind the oil filter

    Hi All,
    Disco ii td5 2000 195,000km - and what a car...love it.

    Repairs/maintenance to date:
    wheel alignment
    both camshaft seals (bore blanking plugs)
    rocker cover gasket
    steering drag link
    turbocharger oil drain pipe gasket

    To do:
    fuel cooler
    engine & transmission sumps
    engine mounts sagged
    rear propshaft rear rubber drive coupling

    What ?!?!?! repairs/fixes:
    * After replacing the turbocharger oil drain pipe gasket, and washed the access oil from the engine. I noticed, a few days later, there is still an oil leak (not as bad as before the gasket replacement). It's behind and about 60mm left and right the oil filter.

    * As the engine warms, there's hot air blowing in from the driver-leg A/C vent. If I turn the A/C on, set to Auto and turn the A/C off, the flow of air stops and will not start again until I switch the engine off and on again.

    Any help will be deeply appreciated.
