I recently changed my alternator and had to "make" a tool to undo the fan nut too. I modified a $10 towball spanner form supercheap. It was originally a 32.5mm ring spanner, so I cut the top off of it and turned it into an open-ender...and filed it out to 36mm.
I undid 1 bolt on the fan pulley (10mm) and then just put a STD 36mm spanner on and gave it a quick knock with a mallet...
