2003 TD5 Suspension: What to get?

There are some good wraps in here for OME stuff, but im still not sold on them. There seems to be more negative feedback about them than positive throughout this site.

As someone who gets 4 weeks holidays per year, I can only really go on 2 or 3 trips a year. The rest of my time is spent city driving. Is it worth my while to spend big on suspension? Will a $700 mates rates kit from suspension stuff be as good to me as an OME kit or a bilstein/king or dobinsons kit?


I can get bilstein shocks and king springs, or dobinsons springs (+2in lift)for $1400

std height bilstein/king springs or dobinsons springs for $1300 (aus, less from US)

OME for $1200

dobinsons springs, coils $950


Has anyone bought std height bilstein shocks from overseas? Did they fit right in or was there a need for some kind of modification?

No you don't!

There are reducing spacer bushes making it a bolt in job for $20.00 the set and won't prevent changing to another shock.

275/78 a little too soft for lifted at speed (gets flighty on poor country back roads)

Put this way....

Dad drove on the D2 with OME for 7 years and loved the ride... And he is far more interested in soft compliant ride than I am.

You can get them anywhere ARB is (good when traveling) and their coils are top quality.

Rovertym who also do the lower front mounts for the 7100 shocks :)

Oh yeah, And eShocks.com now sell them as well :D

(just on the bilsteins 7100 380/80, I had the D2 fully loaded with a 200kg motorbike on a motorbike rack (towbar), and the d2 handled and felt like it was empty... this is when the 7100 come into their own...)

the bilsteins 7100 is a little bit more effort but its well worth it... Suspension is a major part of vehicle safety why get second best when your whole family is in it... also you can rebuild the 7100 for around $250 and change the valving to whatever you want...:D and you can buy all sorts of parts for it...

I think i have narrowed it down to the following:

OME springs + shocks = $1480 fitted.

Dobinsons springs + shocks = $1130 fitted

Ultimate suspension springs + shocks (twin tube) = $1302 fitted

Ultimate suspension springs + shocks (mono tube) = $1800 fitted

Ultimate suspension springs + dobinsons shocks = $1250 fitted


Any suggestions as to which might be the go? Im leaning towards the ultimate suspension setup..
