    Intercooler install

    Hi everyone,

Just wondering, as my mechanical knowledge is increasing, what is involved in installing an intercooler on my 04 TD5 disco? I have found one quite cheap and think it would be a good addition.

It is not a performance intercooler, but... tt would give me:
    ~Better economy?
    ~Better power and torque?
    ~Anything else?

    Any comments?

As you have the ultimate in D2's, being the D2a, it already has a larger intercooler than the earlier models.

So, before you spend your hard-earned $$$, just double check that it is infact larger than the current one.

Now, dont ask me what the actual size difference is, or the size of yours (ours... ) as I have no idea.

As for the benefit of a larger intercooler, it basically means that more air is being cooled, therefore the air is denser, therefore more bang for your engine.

If, however, you find that the one you are looking at is the same size as the current one, then it would probably be good to just give it a really good clean out. That means inside & outside...

As always, the instructions are here somewhere... Probably in The Good Oil.

As said before, your model has the bigger I/Cooler, but have a read of Urban Panzers website...www.discovery2.co.uk, it has a how to install, and also a how to clean your I/Cooler, step by step.

I used his install method, and altho its not a quick job, it is all there, with pics to help.

Think a clean, and or even some silicon hoses may be worth a look at first IMHO

    Cheers Ean

    Hey Barney,
Why go to the quite labour intensive effort to replace your intercooler - which BTW is larger than earlier models - with a non-performance cooler??

If you are actually contemplating fitting as you say - a performance cooler to compliment silicon hoses, EGR removal, cat converter down-pipe removal and a re-mapped ECU.......Then you would/could justify the labour to firstly remove your old 'cooler (Which I will buy off you and use in my 02 Disco) and refit the new improved i/cooler....

It is quite a job to do by yourself and to use your words - as your mechanical knowledge is "growing" .....you should be methodical and allow plenty of room to see what you are doing properly.....I would recommend removing the front grille (Not hard on an 04), the battery and battery box (Again - not hard and while you've got the ECU out - send it away to be re-mapped) as well as the air filter box (Easy-peasy) and of course - the fan (You'll need a 'special' tool). This will give you great access to all of the hose clamps, radiator supports, the radiator itself and also - I recall your disco is an auto so you'll need to access the auto-trans cooler as it will always move when you disturb the radiator to remove and fit an intercooler.

Send me a PM if you like as I've got some pics that will assist - or make contact.

    Cheers mate!
