    3 amigos

Hi everyone, this is the first time posting for me so I hope it all works well!
This is my question to any land rover disco 2 owners, I have the 3 amigos problem and i took it to a mechanic who ran the diagnostic tool over it twice and it came back both times saying the ABS modulator needs to be replaced. Can you drive safely without ABS if you are just driving on the regular road? Also is a second hand ABS module worth buying and what sort of questions do I need to ask when looking at a second hand module? Thanks in advance for you help

    Welcome to aulro

There is an area called "The Good Oil" that is a bit of a cross referance stop.
A couple of the moderators link informative threads listed by common faults for us all to use(A big thanks to those who do it).
This is from the thread regarding the 3 little lads....http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/3...ml#post1116603
2 pages of links to varius threads to look at while your there too.
    Happy reading

A few folk drive for years with the three amigo's, not sure what effect it has long term.
In fact some complain they are lonely when the lads go.
    Cheers, Kyle

Had a never ending problem with the 3 amigos. Got told a lot of ****e from Land Rover. There is an easy solution and one which takes away your worries. I found after using this tool that the ABS sensor on my left front was slightly loose. Pushed back in and no more issue. The unit below made the diagnostics possible and cleared those annoying faults. You can buy from Hard Range Australia and well worth the cost.

Suggest you buy a ABS Amigo V1 USB -Used to Clear and Read the Discovery II ABS Stored faults.

You do not have to replace the Modulator in 99.99999% of cases.
    Follow Alien d2's links.
Also check which members have diagnostic equipment near you here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/electronic...equipment.html and offer a brew or snag and it should all pan out faster, easier and cheaper than you might believe.

    cheers

Hi a friend of mine has an ABS amigo (about $250 I think) which records faults and can reset the abs. Plugs in under the dash to the rear left of the steering wheel. Mine had this fault "114:Shuttle Valve Electric Failure" and only that fault and this one is easily fixed. If you can check and find the fault and you have that one have a look at this site ABS Mod - LAND ROVER CLUB V.I.

But this doesn't help with other faults - eg wheel sensor.

I did option B from the site above (with some moral support from a friend with good mechanical knowledge but it was really pretty staright forward) and so far, about 2 months, the three little buggers have stayed away! Cost about $4 for some connectors and shrink wrap and about 2 hrs of time (I'm very slow....I'm told).

Hope this helps - plenty of guys on this forum with much more knowledge than I have.

i have been through this process before. The mechanic read the codes and gave me 2 choices, choice 1= $2500.00 to put a kit through the ABS modulator which according to him has a 30-40% chance of not working. Choice 2= $4300.00 to fit a new ABS modulator!!! I felt I was being conned so I went to another place specifically to get the fault codes read and and printed out for me, that only cost me $50.00. The main fault was failed shutter valve. I found this part at Rover Parts in Ballarat, Vic for $165.00 ( he also has instructions for DIY installation.) Very simple three bolt job which only took me half an hour. after replacement I went back to the second mechanic and had the codes reset.
Job done, lights gone. so far have been off for nearly 1 year. Don't buy a second hand modulator as you don't know if it has the same pending problem. You can do the math on my repair. Definitely worth trying this first if yours shows the same fault. As for driving without you ABS working simply leaves you with standard brakes that can lock up under hard braking. Also your traction control and hill decent wont work.
Hope this is useful to you.

    3 amigo

Team, my LR mech told me (supported inpart by the handbook), that the ABS is inoperable with the ABS light illuminated. Well, I have the 3 Amigos as constant companions (on and off depending on the phases of the moon, I'm sure) and I hit the skids on a wet road and the ABS worked as advertised. All the usual thumping and pedal throb was evident and she stopped quick. Now I'm not saying that's the case for all Disco II's with the lights on but it might be worth checking under controlled conditions. I've not tried Descent control or TC with them on. Cheers

I have a D2 that when on hunting trips and that first major squeek from dust on the brakes sets off the 3 amigos. I've been through the whole system for checks and all is fine. So its worth investing a bit of time on this forum checking rather than paying for 'advice' which may be wrong. I can say that over the years my symptom is clearly vibration at a point that I can swear by it when in the bush and never faults otherwise. Thankfully a nanocom in the cubby fixes this.
