Question Cracked windscreen - multiple times, same spot

What a strange thing, I recently got a 2003 D2 and while doing road worthiness they found some chips in the windscreen and replaced it (I didn't even know).

Got the car and when we went to the garage the next morning a 10cm crack appeared at the lower end of the screen (near the plenum). The crack got bigger through the day (20cm - 40cm). Called the agent, they picked it up without a fuss and got it replaced.

Had the car for a week and the crack appeared again at about the same area. Same story of it getting bigger through the day.

I hope this not to be the case but I can't help getting this feeling that this can only happen if there is some sort of structural imbalance on the body ......... caused by an accident. Of course the other reason could be it was just a shabby job - which is hard to believe given the agent I bought it from is RACV certified (if this is the right term) and this happened now twice.

We called them and again they agreed to take it back without a fuss. I have requested for a report from the windscreen supplier to explain the reasons for this as the agent assures me that the car is accident free (I saw the VicRoads report). However if there ever was an accident without a claim VicRoads wouldn't know, would they?

Really a pity because the car is in perfect condition (mileage of only 100k) and drives like silk.

    So here my questions:
    * How long does it take to really seat a windscreen before driving the car?
    * Are there any other legitimate reasons why this could happen?

    Thanks

yep, if the supporting rubbers are not installed correctly or the screen is forced into place it will be under stress, all it takes from that point in is a little thermal cycling and some vibration and the glass crack.s

If this was the case the person installing it didn't know what they were doing right? So the point about ensuring the screen seats long enough before moving the car is not so critical?

    it can be yes....

but just because the screen cracks it does not mean its been installed incorrectly.

you could have a deformed sill that the screen sits in.

    Solved!

They finally found the issue. It was a small stone sitting in the sill. This made it crack twice at largely the same spot ........ phew!

Thanks for all the tips and hints. Great forum
