D2 Rear Step Bolt size ??
Hi all...an easy one I hope... could someone please confirm for me the size (length/diameter) of the bolt that goes through the chassi to fit the rear step on and is it just one or a few bolts that I need?
thanks,

Bolt length
Both are M10's but are different lengths. 1 is shorter so when it goes through the chassis rails it won't interfere with the fuel tank.
I'd have to pull both out to confirm length - which I won't as it is a bi**ch of a job
- sorry...
I removed mine from a 7 seater D2 by the way and fitted it to my 02 Disco 5 seater. They are such a good option to have if you have a roof-rack etc. Don't know why LR didn't make them a standard option on all Discoveries!!

m10
took a look today and removed and measured both and they have the same length on my d2 -04
This is one of the smallest problem you can get on a d2
I suggest you take two and then test if it comes too close to the tank
have a nice day

Hello, thanks for the replies... much appreciated.
Just a couple more questions...
1. when you mention M10... is this a standard size I could pick up from a hardware store or only an auto store??
2. As far as coming to close to the tank... how much space should be between the bolt and tank out of curiosity?
3. Of the shorter and longer one, does it matter which one is where?
4. I know you said it was a pain to install also... so.... how long would something like this take?? And what was the issue about the install?
Thanks again :-D
Cheers,
Lp

1. Yes - M10 bolts are quite readily available from just about any hardware, auto or dedicated bolt shop. As they will need to support the step and your weight - might pay to buy some high tensile bolts
2. The space from end of bolt to fuel tank was approx 20-30mm but made worse in my case as I have long-range tanks and not the standard fit (Hence my comment of a pain to get to the bolts - particularly the upper bolt which required me to take the tow-bar supports off first to actualy get at it with a spanner). You should have no problems using the original bolts if you still have the standard fuel tank....and if you kept the bolts that came with the step - you obviously won't have to buy any
3. Hm - I recall the shorter was the upper bolt but it is easy to see which fits where once you install the step
4. Should take you no more than 30 minutes with limited mechanical knowledge and a few suitable tools.
WORK TIP....cable tie the step in the 'downward' position (As if you have stood on it and extended it fully). It will be far easier to slot in the lower bolt and tighten it as it is obstructed when the step is in the normal 'retracted' position. If you can't cable tie it (I used 4 ties and simply cut them off once I had it positioned and tightend) try and use some cord or light rope as it will make the task far easier.
It isn't a laborious job and well worth the effort once you have completed it. As I pointed out in earlier post - the steps are such a handy option I don't know why all Disco's don't have them.

Catmatt - thanks heaps for your reply! Huge help :-D...
I bought the rear step off auction site (56.00 odd dollars - bargain I think LOL)... so it didn't come with the bolts but not a biggie though as hubby has 'plenty' left over from when he rebuilt his FJ40 (maybe that's why it rattles so much hahahah) and has the high tensile ones but worst case will buy some... it's a standard fuel tank too...
Cable ties aren't a problem... we have a plethora of those round here!!
Can the step be mounted on either the left or right side or is it only one side dependent?
Also, if it's no huge issue for you (or anyone else please)... would you be able to pleeeeeeease post pics of your rear step bolted underside as well as extended out and folded in.... just so I can see what's where and how it should be and more in relation to where it is meant to go (if that makes all sense).
There are some 'holes' underneath but I don't know if they are meant for the rear step so i'm a bit lost on that one...
thanks again I appreciate it :-D
Cheers,
Lp

If you haven't already someone list the actual dimensions and I'll have them for sure. I can post down, just so she ends up with something suitably non bunnings.

Thanks Clubagreenie,
I looked through the 'bolt stash' and they are either too fat or too short LOL!!... If you are open still to your offer, let me know via PM... that'd be great :-D
Thanks,

Ok here goes,
D2 to chassis 1A 298103 bolt part no FB110201L M10 x 100
-from chassis 2A 298104 bolt part no KYG101190 M10 x 92
Just had a re-read but can't work out if you need the short or long one. Let me know, I can get A/market or genuine.
