Adding/ changing oil to a transfer case.

    Hi all,

I've developed a small leak from the transfer case and while changing the sump oil this morning thought I would top up the transfer case, but bugger me I could not undo the oil filler plug....what sort of tool do I need to undo that inverted bolt thingy?

Its just a regular 1/2" socket drive.
ie Use just your ratchet or as i do a ratchet with a 3" universal on it.

I tried the 1/2 regular but it did not have enough grip. If repco does not half a 50mm wobble extension I'll try again and graze a few knuckles......got to ask though why place it in such hard to get place??

Job done! All worked well with the change etc and cleaned it well before the oil change. The leak is still there. Is there a common fault or a set or seals that need to be replaced? Is it easy to do?

If your only getting oil droplets on the bottom cover bolt heads, then the cause is that some bolt threads go into a the oil cavity of the sump, oil wicks past the threads and forms on the bolt heads, the threads need to be sealed with a thread locker.

Also for stubburn filler plugs, I've had some real tight ones that I had to use leg power on the bar handle to loosen them.

Could be the intermediate shaft o-ring and it's running down the front of the T/case and forming droplets on the lowest point ie. the bottom bolts of the cover

So I should empty again, remove the bolts (and perhaps the cover) clean and reseal....or while I'm at it replace the mentioned O rings......i'm travelling without the rave CD.....is the o ring a easy job?
