Replacing pitman arms as routine service?

Robinson Service in the Uk has this on their website about D1's but they seem to say that it applies for D2 also:

"Check the tie rod ends carefully, especially the one at the steering gear pitman arm. If they have any play they should be changed. These joints can fail without warning. For that reason if you are at 60,000 miles we suggest replacing any original pitman arm joints, and we’d change the other three also by 90,000. If the pitman arm joint falls off you’ll lose all steering control. We’ve seen several Rovers crash as a result of this failure.

These joints are under $40 each, and I suggest changing them all if their age is unknown. Sometimes the joints can’t be unscrewed from the rods, in which case a whole new rod will be needed."

    ...

So...my D2 has done 180,000K and my D1 another 100,000 plus over that again...do they need to be replaced as suggested by Robinson, even if no obvious play?

    Cheers

In The UK etc salt and corrosion caused by it during winter will cause very quick failures. I suggest that during routine maintenance these items SHOULD be checked and if found to have excess play then replaced.

There is no excuse for them to fail completely other than having never been looked at.

IME landy joints are less prone to breakage without warning than tojo solid front axle joints. Keep an eye on em, grease em, replace boots if torn.

Tojo joints will regulary enough unscrew end caps and spit the ball leaving you to make a roadside fencing wire repair

Landy joints flog out to the point of scare but Im yet to blow one apart?

I have never known one to actually fail, but certainly they should be inspected at every service and replaced if there is any perceptible play (and boots replaced if necessary), as, while this does not indicate approaching failure, it does downgrade the steering.
