And a couple more. Overall the back of the car is sitting a good 50mm higher, which is very nice!
On the weekend, I replaced the rear springs in the disco. I didnt do it entirely on my own, I had the help of my legendary father in law, and his trolly jack and axle stands, but anyway...we did well. It took about 2 hours all up and we repalced the King springs with 2" lifted Dobinsons.
Overall it went to plan. I followed the instructions from Tombie and it was smooth. We found the springs a little big to force in without being compressed a little so we put them under the back of the car and let the car down on them to compress them a good 50mm or so and then they almost slid in, but with some help from a jimmy bar.
It was a GREAT learning experience! I cant believe I paid someone to do it last time, when its THAT SIMPLE to do yourself.
Thanks everyone who posted for me before on my "DIY REPLACING SPRINGS" thread, I am a VERY happy up-and-coming Land Rover mechanic now!
and as we all know, it never happened without photos...here are as many as aulro will let me upload!

Nice work!
There's nothing more satisfying than completely a job on your Landy on your own.![]()

Thanks for posting up those photos. I think I need to visit some of the threads you mentioned to learn a bit more about suspension. I believe mine are probably the originals - so at 11 or so years old and 250 000kms they are quite likely due for replacement.
When I added the bullbar I think the nose of the vehicle dipped by about 15mm.
Maybe I'll call into a suspension place next time I'm in the big smoke and have them tested. IIRC some of those places used to do "free" checks...but I'm thinking the "free" component of the process may have allowed some bias to creep into the outcome of the results.
If youve been too stingy to replace your springs and shocks even though you know theyre stuffed the "FREE" test is bait too good to refuse.
The free test just gets you in the door and the sales pitch is the coup de grace.

If youre trying to work out whether yours are sagging, my measurements with 2" lifted springs are, from ground to the bottom of the wheel arch moulding is:
-910mm rear
- 870mm front.
I have normal 2" lifted king springs on the front and extra heavy duty 2" lifted dobinsons on the back now. I do have a steel ARB bull bar, 2 XGT lightforce lights and 2 big UHF aerials so I'm not surprised it's a little lower at front than back. I also have this thing about it looking lower at the back so I like it looking high at the back.
As I said, I'd NEVER pay someone to do a suspension install ever again! Really it's basic! Buy your springs over eBay or through recommendations on Aulro and then install yourself. Very easy, just don't be in a rush and make sure you got a good jack, axle stands, some timber blocks/lengths etc and it'll all go fine. A full kit from fusion auto in Perth with 2" lift is only $760 including shipping, and my 2" extra heavy duty springs (2 only) were $200 from Perth including shipping.
Have fun!
Thanks for those measurements Barney. I'll see what height mine sits at and then start the subtle process of justifying their replacement to my wife...![]()
Oh ok that makes sense. So from the middle of the rim to the underside of the wheel arch is:
Front 510mm
Rear 550mm
