Thread: They don't make TD5 engines still...do they?

Question They don't make TD5 engines still...do they?

On one occasion when I took my Disco to a mechanic to have the leakey water pump replaced I was having the "geez I'm glad I picked up the leak in time" conversation with the mechanic, he agreed saying that it cost $14,000 for a new TD5 engine. I was so over awed with this cost (I don't even know if this is an accurate price) that I failed to realize that it was the year 2009 and that the last D2 would have rolled of the production line some years earlier, so I don't even know where I would have got a new one from.

Recently I wondered if they still make TD5 engines for replacement, or would they have manufactured a stockpile of TD5's after the last D2 rolled off the line and set them aside for warranty work or purchase?

    Any thoughts?

Isn't a later (larger capacity) about to power the Ford Ranger?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

The TD5 as such is no longer made but various "organisations" may still hold stocks of new (old) engines.

Australian law requires manufacturers to maintain stocks of all parts for a period of 10 years so in theory Landrover should (by law) still be able to provide new engines.

the new (top of the range) Ranger has an option for a 3.2lt 5 cyl diesel which, IIRC is an evolution of the TD5

It has now had the Ford redesign work and isn't being built in the UK, a plus on two counts, But it is a 5 cylinder four stroke engine which is intrinsically unbalanced.

I'm sure they will have improved the engine during the bore-out. Hmmm, VNT even!

Id love to swap it into mine. Changed bolt pattern - I'm sure there would be an adaptor or bellhousing to make it fit before long.

Found this on a Ranger review.

The engine is a development of the PSA Peugeot Citroen-Ford “Puma” drivetrain alliance and is effectively a four-cylinder 2.5-litre turbo-diesel PSA-Ford engine with an extra cylinder.
Ford Asia Pacific president Joe Hinrichs says the engine is made in Britain but would soon be produced at Ford’s new Port Elizabeth factory in South Africa.

Thats a shame if its a development of the Puma. Wont fit under the bonnet in that case.
