It is a metric 6 mm thread, so you would use a 6mm helicoil. The helicoil kit will tell you what size drill bit. Some kits come with the drill bit.

If there is clearance issues with the drill you could get these.

I have a full set of these from 1/16 to 1/4. Being alloy they would work with a quarter drive socket, or in a drill with the extensions in the bottom of picture.

Ok just want to get single bits as opposed to a full kit which costs over $100.

Also do you drill with the lid on or off to prevent alloy chips going into the oil?

Kits aren't that much. I think I paid about $45.00.

I drilled with the cover off but I stuffed a heap of rag in the bowl and I was very careful to get all the drill shavings out.

You only thread part of the drilled hole to fit the helicoil correct?

Where the thread was you drill it oversize to suit the helicoil. You then tap the new thread to suit the helicoil. Screw the helicoil in until it is just below the top of the hole. Then using the tang removal tool. break the tang with a sharp hit.

I threaded mine yesterday. I thought the bolts were tight enough but obviously not. Just drove home for lunch and noticed smoke coming out from under the bonnet. I lifted the bonnet and had a fire on top of the manifold and up the bonnet. Good thing the extinguisher was handy. Only damage is the melted windscreen washer. Oops

Has anyone considered re-tapping the thread all the way and fitting studs? This would avoid future issues with thread wear every 10,000 kms.

Just a though ;)

P.S The Land Rover Dealership stripped out mine on a '04 D2a and fitted Helicoils. If Land Rover can't get it right what hope has anyone else got.... wait it was a dealership mechanic [bigwhistle]

Nothing wrong with helicoils. They are a stainless thread and if fitted correctly should last forever.
