    Camping/Reverse Lighting

Have been doing a bit of a search through the internets and haven't found much on this topic. I want to fit some camping/reverse light's. It's a 52cm LED bar.
Was hoping to do one on the rear and one on the side. Although will more than likely wait to fit the side one until I have a roof rack and then make up a wiring harness to suit.
What I am hoping to see is other people's home made contraption's (not wanting to spend squillions of dollars on rear wheel carriers) for mounting light's.
Was thinking of getting a mate to make up a mount that uses the spare wheel bolts so the light sits just above the spare wheel. Was thinking in a "T" shape so the light has some support as it's a long skinny one.

Any other idea's? Unfortunately I don't have the plastic guard above the door or I could have made use of it somehow.

Not that easy using the spare wheel mounting studs, as your mount will have to bend around the inner profile of the spare wheel.

An easier way is to remove the spare wheel carrier (6 bolts). Make up a couple of "spacers" out of 3mm flat bar which protrude above the wheel carrier by a couple of inches, and then weld a length of half inch or three quarter inch square tubing to the protruding section of each "spacer", which will then protrude above the spare tyre.

The bolts which hold the wheel carrier to the rear door are long enough to allow you to fit the "spacers" and then re-fit the wheel carrier to the door. If you are thinking of fitting larger tyres, you can turn the wheel carrier upside down at the same time to provide the extra clearance for the larger tyre above the bumper bar. The "spacers" also give you the extra clearance that you need for the rear windscreen wiper behind a wider tyre.

Then it's just a matter of welding another bit of flat bar across the top of the two bits of square tubing to provide the mount for your LED light. If you really want to get fancy, you can use two telescopic sections instead of the two bits of square tubing to give you an adjustable height mount for your light.

I have done pretty much the same as described above on mine, but only one length of square tubing welded to one of the "spacers" (the one on the right hand side), and then simply welded a bit of angle to the top of the square tubing. I have a 4 LED Narva worklight mounted on the top of this - the wiring runs down through the centre of the square tubing.

    Cheers .........

I meant the carrier bolts. Where it mounts on the car. Like the way you have explained.
So maybe 2 x 3mm flat bar running vertically, cut to the length of the carrier plus 3-4 inches above spare wheel. Then could weld another piece of bar between these two as the mount for the light.
Or go woth your idea of adjustable square tubing.
Now I have my head around it I reckon I can work something out.
How did you run your wires up to your light? Through the door?

    Link to mine:
Kieren's LandRover Discovery II: New rear light

Just bolted the bottom section of the pole to the rear wheel carrier by drilling two holes and using some bolts, made use of the grommet behind the spare wheel to run the wire.....and hey presto!

    Cheers,

Yep - same as Kieren. I fed in through the rubber grommet in the door behind the spare wheel, and then followed the original wiring through into the rear right guard using the original grommets and rubber sock that is there. It's not difficult to feed another couple of wires through with the originals.

If I was doing mine again though, I'd go with the telescopic leg that Kieren has used for his light - much more practical than what I have - and it looks good too.
    Cheers .........

    Good thinking '99.
Will have a look in bunnings this weekend!
By the looks of it it'll only take an hour to mount and run power.

Completed the work/ reserve light on the extendable pole (brilliant idea!!). Wired it up to the reverse wire BUT the light is dim - Why? when connected to the tail light it is twice or three times brighter??

I would love to have the light working as a reverse aid and as a camp light - can anybody help out with a diagram?
