Thread: D2 Dual Battery Setup

    Anyone got any suggestions as to which battery would be good for the setup?

    From all my searching on this site it seems the optima yellow tops are the favourites. They are pretty damn expensive though!

    What about the exide model thats designed for the arb tray?

    Any other alternatives?

    I just installed a D34 in the ARB tray, and a D31A for starting. rrTurboD has a special going on them currenty. $275 & $355 delivered.

    It's in the Markets or Vendors forum.

    I have yet to fit mine but it's all arrived now. I went with:
    -SC80 kit from drivesafe/traxide with all the bits and peices
    -150ah battery from Aussie batteries which is $370 delivered, far cheaper than supercharge or optima
    -6m of 6B&S cable from eBay $69
    -4 cigarette lighter sockets to mount for my accessories

    I need to get some split conduit then I'm ready to install the endless cold beer machine!

    Cheers Yorkie. Whats the damage on that particular battery?

    Fluids: I noticed that and have contacted him previously. Still, having a look around first

    Barney: You must be fitting your battery in the rear bin? I am limited to a D34 by the ARB tray

    about $180ish from memory, good value i reckon and has performed faultlessly for the 12mth it has been in.

    My 150ah is $370 delivered. I would have gone a 165ah as it was only $20 more expensive but it was too long.

    Yep I'm putting it in the back bins, well I'm going to try. I did seriously look into an ARB tray but when I found out I could only fit upto an 80ah I decided not to.

    The battery arrived yesterday and it weighs about 600kg I reckon! I'm intending on putting the whole setup inside the bin with nothing visible from the outside. When it's done I'll be sure to post photos of it complete, or me completely pi$$ed if it doesnt all work!

    No worries. Will check it out . Some people have been using this one Supercharge Batteries - Car Batteries, Maintenance, Expanded Grid Technology which is around the same price. The only difference i can see is that it doubles as a starting battery??

    Ah i see. Well i am definitely using the ARB tray because i like to keep the rear bins free. Which 80ah battery did you see that was able to fit in an arb tray??

    I have a D48 in the ARB tray and it works well but, as I said in another post, it can leak acid. Hot weather, rough ground and/or steep hills when the engine bay gets really hot, the acid leaks out. You must be carefull not to overfill the cells. Means I check more often and only just cover the plates in the cells.

    I had an 80aH Remco AGM which was good value for money but which didn't cope with the heat hence using the D48. Mounted battery into to the tray using 2 standard hook bolts and piece of flat bar across the top of the battery. Drilled a couple of bolts into the base of the ARB tray and used a block of wood jammed under the lip of the tray to prevent battery sliding sideways. Meant I did away with the heat shield which may have been the problem.

    My solution to the low aH capacity is a 60W solar panel. If we are on the move daily, I don't need a larger size; if we are stationary for more than a day then I use the panel to top up.

    Based on drivesafe's information in Barney2803's thread on second battery, next time I'll bite the bullet for a yellow top. It appears this is a battery designed for hot engine bays, won't leak acid, will charge quickly and also offers cranking capability. However, in installing in the ARB tray I'll need to work out a way to retain or install a heat shield.
