The difference is: ... 0.4mm ...
And it is where it matters, on the thread.
The dome wheel nut has a reduced thread engagement, hence it is easy to spin on the door studs. You don't want this reduced thread engagement on your road wheels... Hence the warning in the user manual.
And yes, you made me go out and measure them tonight.:D:D:D 12.5mm standard versus 12.9mm domed internal diameter.

Thanks for the measurement Ron. I have now seen a real locknut on a friends D2 and I am satisfied that I do not have any. My 2 nuts with domed heads are just ordinary wheel nuts that some berk has permanently fitted domed covers to!
You can use the road wheel nuts on the spare wheel carrier, the thread is the same 14 x 1.5 mm. I know this because I bought a tap and die to clean up the threads on the carrier and nuts.
