One thing to consider is that the transfer case of the D2 lacks CDL, relying only on traction control. The early transfer boxes are easily converted, though, but on later ones apparently this option was not available anymore.
I am happy with my D1 (despite the well known shortcomings) but have to admit that, never having owned a D2, my knowledge about these is mainly from hearsay.
It was still there, but not connected in early D2's - so easy to get running.Quote:

Definitely something I would check and don't buy a D2 without it (or without it being on of the early easy to connect up units).
These are good points about the CDL, but it's a BIG bargaining chip.
If you can get one without it cheap enough, it might be worth retro fitting it. (approx $1800 - speaking from experience)
OR, if you can find one with the internals, and the previous owner doesn't know, you may be able to beat the price down.

Just giving new life to this old thread. I could list the host of differences between the D1 and the D2, but my D1 feels like an old British rumpled and comfortable suit and my D2 feels more like it was designed by the Germans...love both, but the D1 is like comfort food.

I bought my 1995 D1 V8 with 150k km, fitted lpg, and did another 250k km as both daily drive and towing small camper all over oz, on the beach, Kimberly you name it. Everything (almost) fell off and I put it back on again, but no computer **** probs or manifold fall off or blown head gaskets. Lpg savings alone paid for her.
Upgraded to a D2 V8 with lpg. Lovely drive and great Hi Fi for all those times it just stops! Head gaskets, exhaust falling apart, alternator, PS pump, coil packs, new water pump x 2, CKP sensor x 2, 3 ******* amigos and on it goes
D1 is now unreg paddock basher. I say sorry every time I go near her.

I feel the same way. I had a D1 300TDi which ran with limited mainenance required for 200000km. I then upgraded to a 2003 TD5 DIIa with 68000km on the clock and have encountered all of the common faults that they have and a bit. I really love my car, but sometimes I really don't if you know what I mean. I am fortunately a mechanic by trade and feel sorry for people who do not have the know how to maintain these vehicles themselves. Thats why I post on here a bit and try and help a few out as many others do.Quote:

I know your pain too. I bought my D1 ES V8 with I think mid 200's km on it. Water pump failed within the first month, that was probably my fault though, went to Mt Buller and forgot to put anti-freeze in. The car has been on the road for about 4 weeks in the last 4 months. First was gearbox stuck in 1st, "full rebuild", went back in 2 later coz it was still sticking in 1st, sent back again coz it was doing the same thing. Now its at the mechanic coz the alternator is fried and air flow meter dead. Has a few more things that need doing. Unfortunately my mechanical knowledge is very low and I don't have the $$$ to buy some basic tools and possibly make mistakes.Quote:

I have a D2 V8 and am in the process of taking from a tourer to extreme off-roader and it's not easy! Some of the stuff I've had to custom make, whereas if I had a D1 I could have bought parts off the shelf. Not to mention trying to find someone wrecking a D2 to replace the wing mirror I smashed (versus the 20 D1's being wrecked at any given time).
