Question Did you torque your steering damper to 125nm?

According to RAVE CD, the torque setting for the steering damper bolts is 125nm. When I was doing mine up the other day, I got to 100nm, and it seemed to be starting to clamp/squish the bracket in, so I stopped. Just wondering from others experience is it safe to keep going to the recommended torque setting?

    Are you sure?
RRC ones have a locknut and are only 7/16 so would only take about 20NM.

Yes I had similar experience- replaced my damper and was using the torque wrench, before I got to 125nm it seemed to be crimping the bracket- i stopped, backed off a bit and just did it up firmly with a ratchet- I did use some loctite for peace of mind.

I think it is a mistake and should be 25Nm.

Yes. These also have a nylocknut.

Hmmmm... I might just leave it as is then. I am a sucker for using the correct torque, hate it when I can't get a torque wrench to a bolt or find a listed torque setting. I even use the torque wrench on my wheel nuts.

Probably the most critical fasteners on a vehicle so smart to use there IMO

I just checked my Haynes manual and it says that the Steering Damper bolts / nuts are to be 125Nm or 92 lbf/ft

just a cross reference, but I cant find an online convertor from metric to imperial, they may have got it the wrong way round - you best check for your self

    The mystery is solved.
The D2 damper is completely different to the D1 RRC damper.
It has an eye each end so does need a high torque to lock up the centre tube where the RRC and D1 has a spike at each end.. 125 is a lot but there you go.

I believe it is a mistake, as its not that critical and you have other bolts more critical with more load but with less torque such as your tie rod end nuts, and also the value they suggest is coincidently the same as that which they have mixed up with the tie rod end torques...

Rave mistake for tie rod end / ball joint / drag link / track rod torque
