Lift kit, worries about quality shocks

I will lift my lil Disco 2 td5 soon. This BritPart kit from looks tempting at its low price: http://www.paddockspares.com/plus-2-...shock-abs.html I have feedback from others running Defs and RRs that the kit is solid. But I have no information on who actually makes their shocks for them.

OME shocks came with their lift kit for my hdj80 but I tossed them in the bin quickly. They felt stiff on little stuff but fell over completely on bigger obstacles. I fitted Bilsteins which worked much better but they are not cheap.

So, is anybody out here running a 2" lift and Bilsteins on a D2 with ACE? But then for that low price, maybe I'll just give the BritPart shocks a go and see if they work better than OME shocks.

    Any feedback most welcome.

We fit Britpart Supergaz dampers as standard in our workshop and have never had a problem with them. They are good bits of kit. I don't know who makes them thought...

I can probably match that price on that kit, but are you converting from air spring? If so you will need the spring plates too.

I am not qualified to talk about D2, but I have extensive experience with RRC.
If you are staying in France where there are not thousands of Ks of corrugations then any shock should last OK. If you plan to go to North Africa and travel on corrugations, the extra price of Bilstiens is well justified, and you can get Bilstien from the USA very cheaply.

You generally get what you pay for and my experience in general with Britpart is that the products are OK for general use but fall down when used hard. I bought a set of engine mounts which lasted under 10KK up Cape York.
Many aftermarket shocks are deliberately valved stiffer than OEM so that the buyer can feel a difference when they are fitted, when on really rough stuff like steps etc often a soft OEM shock is superior.

    England has greenlanes and tarmac.
Here we have some of the worst tracks in the world, constant corrigations, lots of pot holes, gravel, etc etc so what might be good in the UK, is not really adequate her in Oz

What you've just described there sounds like an A road in the UK nowadays

I've actually got the D1 equivalent of that 2" lift kit on my 1998 D1, and so far so good - fitted last year, and now has done ~8000kms.

The road manners are much better than with the old saggy OEM springs and shocks, and the limited offroad exposure has also been fine.

I am running 2" extended Bilsteins and heavy duty springs with ACE on my D2 V8 and can not fault it one bit.

If you are going to run Bilsteins though and want an off the shelf shock for a lifted D2 as far as I know you can only get the longer Bilsteins from Australia.

They where actually developed in Australia by a group of LR owners and can not be sourced from the USA etc.

Here is a link to the shocks I use:

    https://www.suspensionstuff.com.au/s...ac6e34171ad6fd

Here are the coils I use:

    https://www.suspensionstuff.com.au/s...ac6e34171ad6fd

I also have the stone guards for the shocks and a Bilstein steering dampner. It all works well.

If you dont mind purchasing the lower shock mounts from Rovertym in the USA for the front it opens up a lot more options for Bilstein shocks including longer travel short body shocks with remote reseviour etc.

I will be changing mine out eraly next year for 12" travel short body shocks as mentioned above with 3" coils.

    Thanks to everyone!

I got a lot of useful feedback from this thread. I've decided to fit the BritPart shocks then see how it goes. It's very hard to argue with that low price!

I have connections in the US if I decide later to order Bilstein 5000 series.
