    R380 Gearbox output seal

    Hello does anyone know how far the rear output seal on the r380 has to be in?
    Its not made clear in the manual as it uses a special tool.
    The reason I am asking is that mine was leaking live a seive. I have removed the transfercase and I have removed the collar. before removing the collar I looked at the seal and to me it was not in far enough as the lip was on the edge and possibly running in the groove of the collar.. Upon removing the collar you can see that it was indeed running of the edge but there is also another part of this seal that was running in or close to the middle. the seal itself was just proud of the casing.
    When you actually look at the rear housing there is a chamfered edge and to my way of thinking the seal should be at the same level as the bottom of the chamfer. I back this up as when I fitted a new collar I could see that the seal edge was now more on the collar and not running in the groove in the middle of the collar.. so far no more leaks. I suspect that someone has tried to fit a new seal in without removing the collar, as the transfercase was repaired/ made leakproof by a dealer before I got the vehicle. The transfercase was not leaking and it has a new seal. the clutch was aslo replaced at the same time.I personally dont believe the r380 seal needed replacement but they did it while the transfercase was off, but they haved caused this bigger leak by not doing it right. I think it also very slack when the gearbox was off and then refitted that the tags holding the rear pipe behind the TD5 motor were never put back into the bellhousing bolts and were just bent out the way so the pipe just flopped all over the place. The oil pressure switch connetcor was also never put back on AT ALL!, This was all done last year so its been off all that time... I have had the disco for a month. And I wonder why I wont get anyone to work on my Landies

    You're right about the depth of the output seal of the R380 - whilst the dealer was trying to do the right thing by replacing the those seals when in all probability it was the TC intermediate seal that was leaking, the output seal has to be driven all the way down to the bottom of it's housing.
    If in the future you have to do it again, you can replace the output seal without removing the collar. Use a speedi sleeve a little bigger than the ID of the seal, and you can get it over the collar without damage.

    It could also be leaking out along the shaft splines, those fibre washers can let oil out, trick is to smear a little RTV on the inside before you fit the fibre washer before you do up the bolt.

    My D2 is gone in for a reseal just now after being done 2 weeks ago, we thought the seal failed. From reading this post is there a trick to fitting the main box output shaft seal ??

    I made a brass tool for that, it screwed with my head trying to get the seal in for a bit
    IIRC Big Jon said they just used to use a big O ring to fill the void when pushing the seal in.
