    Hi Paul,

You're right, the OEM filter is a much better/tighter fit than the Coopers. But I have compared the performance of the Coopers one to OEM on our recent 15,000Km trip in terms of very fine dust when settles in the intake hose past the filter.

I found that they actually both let through about the same amount of very fine dust (Flinders, Centre, Arnhem, Kimberly, Pilbara - it's all dusty!). I did not notice any dust getting past the edge seals, but just a very small amount settling in the intake beyond both brands of filters. So both filters don't filter out all the very find dust. I'm sticking to OEM but Coopers still worked as well in my experience.

    Cheers

So does anyone know how to stop that fine dust getting past the filter?

i found the grill on the MAF covered in the stuff after a trip thru the centre.
i was using LR filter and have since fitted snorkel as an aid but there must be a more definite way?

    thanks

Isn't that the same as an oily intercooler

What about a Donaldson pre cleaner on the snorkel instead instead of teh ram head? Personally, have not tried it......

Exactly,to fix the problem you need another air box,but that seems to have gone into the too hard basket.

in fact a VS dunnydore box is way better than the piece of crap D2 airbox

What i can't uderstand is if they all do let air & fine dirt bypass the filter, there certainly aren't engines failing because of this fault.maybe the oily intercooler is helping?

ihave had 3 TD5 D2's they all have done it.

I have been a bit dubious about posting this as I was ashamed of what's going on with my engine but it appears that this is standard Discovery air cleaner.

I take some pride in the way I care for my motors as I have rebuilt a couple of motors that hadn't been cared for before I got them. I've come to learn that you can do things that others might consider to be cruel to a motor but if its serviced well than it will take it just fine. When I say cruel I mean I had a Suzuki Swift that would take off every time with the wheels spinnig and reved to 9000rpm. That was partly due to the cam and it not having much torque down low it was just easier to spin the wheels a little than to slip the clutch. It was tuned, balanced, always ran good oil that was changed frequently. The thing would run like that for ever.

I have no idea how the TD5 seems to run like this with out excessive wear problems.

This is one of the reasons for getting a snorkel as well as the likely hood of crossing deep water here in the NT.

I have always run K&N filters on all my vehicles and never seen any residue of any kind past the filter. My last vehicle was a WRX that had the standard inner guard intake muffler removed so air came straight from the inner guard and I had a good 10km of dirt road in and out of home and never had anything like this.

The photo above is result of about 5000km with a paper filter. I even took the airbox out to make sure there was no leak around the filter. It fits firmly in the base an the clips clamp it lightly that I have no doubt this dirt has come through the paper. Thats post filter with my finger mark showing the dirt.

I have done considerable searching on the net and this seems pretty normal for anyone that does a bit of dirt road driving with no snorkel and a paper air filter of any kind.

Yep that dust comes through the filter! I fixed it by fitting a UniFilter ( Yeah Yeah, Beats back the howling mob with a stick) No more dust in pipe. The snorkel helps but it is the really fine talcum powder type dust that is the problem. Heavy machinery have a inner and outer filters normally which is what these should have in an ideal world. I know a bloke that had a turbo self destruct from a blocked filter on an new '02 model. He was doing a lot of dirt road and L/R neglected to service the filter accordingly.Dont think L/R saw the car again after it was repaired

    Talking TD5 air filters

the snorkel was the best for mine I would not swim my D2 that deep that water would enter through duckbill drain but when trans hose separated I had trans oil in filter box and everywhere else!!!!

I suppose paper filters just work well enough for most and filter just good enough to keep an engine going long enough that a vehicle will fail in some other way before the engine ends its life.
