    TD5 air filters

During a recent trip 3500km trip to the Northern Flinders Ranges I discovered that the Coopers air filter element appears to have been leaking fine dust into intake. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do much beyond a daily "drop" clean to remove some of the dust build up from the filter.

Part of the problem stems from the fact that the D2 appears to have had a bull bar fitted in the past (since removed) and the wheel arch liner has been cut away, which appears to allow significantly more dust, rubbish and spray to enter the filter box than would otherwise be the case. Replacing the arch liner is currently top of the to-do list.

I decided to try out genuine Land Rover element, which I picked up today. I was a bit surprised at the difference between the two given that the oft repeated claim here is that the Coopers filters are OEM.

The seal on the Coopers item is very poorly moulded, and the outside dimensions are a few mm smaller than the genuine part. The LR air filter is a very tight fit into the lower housing whereas the Coopers dropped in with minimal effort. The Coopers may have shrunk with heat and age, but it's pretty dodgy if that is the case.

The new genuine filter is on the left, the dead Coopers on the right. If you check the large version of the pics on Flickr you can clearly see the shoddy moulding on the Coopers seals.

Perhaps I got a dud Coopers filter but I'll definitely wouldn't waste my money on them in future. I'll also look at Mann air filters in future as these do appear to be identical to the LR genuine part.

    cheers
    Paul

Well I'm still using Coopers filters, but I did have one experience that was a bit scary- coming into Darwin after a Cape Yprk and Gulf trip combined I noticed the td5 starting to pulse a little, as though it was making up its mind how much power to use ( I was using cruise control), at first I thought oil in the ecu, but when i got to Darwin I serviced the car and discovered a torn Cooper air filter, which was clearly being sucked by the turbo to block the intake and hence the pulsing feel. Now it had copped a lot of dust and with hindsight I should have changed it (i'd used the spare after a water crossing went awry and wet the filter i had in there) earlier, so I blame myself rather than Coopers, but interesting to think it might have been different with an OEM. Can't beat $70 for a full set of filters from ebay though

There are a few posts about this,i find even with the genuine filter there is still some very fine dust bypassing
Grease around the seals on the airbox helps, but the airbox design is very poor.I also had a safari snorkle fitted which made a massive difference in dusty conditions,as the air getting into the airbox had a lot less dust mixed with it,in fact i got at least 3 times the mileage out of each air filter.

Hi, according to my sources, Mann are the OEM filter makers, so it would be likely that they would look the same.Cheers, 130man.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'll check out the pricing on them for next time.

OT, have you sealed the duckbill water egress, and the smaller drain on the bottom of the air box?

    cheers

Should that be really sealed?? How does rain water get away if you have a snorkle?

the design of the snorkle should prevent rain water from getting in there in the first place.
i still have the valve in the airbox and have considered blocking it off.

I queried ARB about the sealing of the duckbill doodad when I fitted my Safari Snorkel. They recommend leaving it as is but sealing it if you are going swimming with a bit of sensor safe silastic at the time. I assume they have seen more issues from water ingress due to rain than from leaking duck bill seals.

However you do have to remember to seal it up.

Britpart supply Mann as OE spec, and Allmakes supply Mahle as OE spec... I guess you can take your choice.
