    Gasket sealing

I have some long deferred things to do on my TD5. Replacing the gaskets at each end of the fancy bent metal pipe from the sump to half way up the block. The gaskets are metal and have a lip. Does it matter which side faces the block or sump? Should I use gasket sealant?

I have just replaced the oil filters and it feels like the bolt nearest the block on the centrifugal filter is just about to strip. It looks like it is non standard as it is a plain bolt and much longer than the other one. Suggestions? Leave it and hope for the best? Fit a helicoil? Tap it out to the next size up? Just use lots of sealer?

Finally, exactly what socket size is the lower bolt on the engine mounting? The only imperial or metric one I can get to fit is 16mm but even that does not feel right.

    Hi Bilbo
I use locktite 510 or 518 on all my gsakets. 510 for steel and 518 for aluminum etc. As for the nut, wouldn't be 5/8 af would it? As for
the spin filter housing bolts, it would be better to helicoil them. Lock the helicoils in with locktite.

Hi Bilbo, I would do the helicoil repair as its a permanent fix and stronger than original. The gaskets are steel with a rubberised coating and dont require sealant. But you can use the old ones with sealant if you want. The loctite sealants have my vote.
yell if you need a hand.

    cheers

    Thanks Strangy

I may just come and get some advice on helicoils, never done one myself. I have got one engine mounting bolt off and it really is 18mm socket on the top and 15mm socket on the bottom - never seen these sizes before. I'm off to buy a single hex 16mm to get the other one off. The LR mechanic says the oil transfer pipe gaskets can face either way.
