Torque Converter problem?

Al, Chris,

My d2 does the same thing, though it seems to have only started in the past 3 or so months. If I leave it idle for about 30 seconds it picks up D and R straight away. I did an oil change a month or so back and that didn't really improve things, although whoever lasted worked on the auto had over tightened 2 of the 3 the bolts holding on the filter and I had to abandon before I rounded the torx socket.


Baffle, sounds like torque convertor lock up. The D2 auto will engage the torque convertor lock-up clutch in all forward gears. In first it appears to require greater that 80% throttle and a road speed of over 20km/h to trigger lock-up. Lock-up is most obvious in 4th at just above 80km/h when the revs drop noticeably as the TC lock-up clutch engages.

Can you fill us i'n with the correct terminology , ? . Is this a acceptable " basic name" to explain things , each gear differs i'n apron 250 rpm due to the slip and lock of a 2 speed converter?.

yep, what you're talking about is a torque converter with a lockup clutch...

generally unless you like working with plant ever since about 1985ish all autos have a TC with a lockup clutch.

To completely thread jack this , sorry grendawkin . Drove to work this evening , no traffic . About 1 km at 50 kph then straight onto a clear motorway at 100kph , a couple of km in the temp came up at the torque converter locked up ( as it should ) and stayed locked up :) . Put your foot down and engine loads up and increases with speed , its a different machine , fantastic . New it would not last and it didn't about 8km into the journey had to stop at lights and then back up to 100kph and no lockup . Guessing its temp related as normally the first km off the journey takes about 10mins in rush hour so the auto would be hot by the time I hit the motorway and then never lock up .

See if a fluid change makes any difference , makes me wonder how long its been like this . Have not paid much attention until all the talk about it .

Blknight would you have any idea what would cause an autobox to play up only on the changes from 1st-2nd (holds 1st too long) and 2nd-3rd (revs flare)? 3rd and 4th change and lockup smoothly. It's a lot more obvious under heavy load.
Fluid and filter recently changed and MAF is working as normal according to the Nanocom an no fault codes logged.

Mechanical or Electrical ?? Maybe governer or valve block??

Would appreciate your opinion.

There's no actual auto fluid temp sensor, so the computer sort of guesses when it is hot enough based on coolant or outside temp, and time the engine has been running so I don't think that's a temperature thing. How long since you e changed the auto fluid?

Id want to start out by diagnosing the box's pressures and then doing the full spectrum test on it....

Forced to guess Id suggest that you may be looking at worn clutch packs on the primary planetary set possibly combined with a slipping stator sprag.

If you're very lucky you may find that its simply the pump aerating the oil as its sucking air past the filter seal.

Is it possible to assess the level of wear from the gearbox adaptation values reported by diagnostic tools. There is very little documentation I can find that explains what values might indicate excessive wear.
