in a nutshell your TC's lock up clutch friction material is dying...
keeping fresh oil up to it will extend the life of the TC but at the cost of ciruclating the crud it sheds through the auto.

I think it's pretty standard for autos not to lock until they have warmed up. The D2 relies on engine temperature as a proxy for auto oil temp. Someone smarter here might be able to give a good reason why lockup doesn't occur when cold.
I kind of know your are right Dave but just hoping there was another option apart from dropping the box . It's got 240km on the clock and on one hand I am tempted to just drop the box out and swap out the converter as the auto seems fine in all other respects , on the other hand its probably getting close to a rebuid anyway and I don't want to drop it twice . Also stalling until I get access to a hoist , bugger if I am going to try and drop it on the shed floor .
Cheers
Chris
