    Guesstimate on costs

I'm putting my 1999 D2 TD5 Auto in to have its gearbox looked at next monday as it holds onto 1st gear and flares slightly from 2nd to 3rd.
3rd and 4th change smoothly and Torque Converter is locking up no worries.
I have changed fluid and filter and no difference.

While its in there i might get a few other things done so just wondering if anyone knows approx costs of the following.

New Sump gasket (leaking) and replace oil pump bolt
Replace Exhaust manifold gasket (I will also see if they will modify it)
Replace serpentine belt - squeals for the first 50m of driving then stops.
Replace Injector Loom (also modify if possible)

Could the oily injector loom affect the auto changes?

I imagine the gearbox work may get pricey so just wanted to get a rough idea of what i'm up for. Work will be done at Hunter Cuthill in Geelong.

    Cheers,

    Rob

I'm betting there is nothing wrong with your Auto (if its got clean fluid to correct level).

I'd bet your MAF (AFM) has failed and is giving bad data to the transmission!

You're better off chasing it yourself first... Otherwise its going to cost you a packet.

Pop bonnet and unplug your MAF and then see how it drives...
If possible, find someone with a good working D2 TD5 (any age) and try their MAF and see how it drives...

MAF has a huge effect on the transmissions shifting

Thanks for the suggestion Tombie but no luck, I took it for a drive with the MAF unplugged and no change. Nanocom shows the MAF reading around 50 at idle and anything up to about 450-500 under hard acceleration.

Any other suggestions?? I've just clocked over 200,000 hoping its not gonna be an auto rebuild, i've heard 250,000kms seems to be common for the auto to die.

2nd this post.nanocom showed mine was us.Replaced appox $240 and gear changes much improved.
Idle smoother and more ks per tank.
My td5 has a BD chip and didnt notice lack of power until maf replaced.
    Easy to check.

Hunter Cuthill is fantastic, Gordon is brilliant when it comes to having answers or at least options after you've finished chewing his ear off. Chances are he'll be the one doing the work as I think Adam mainly looks after the bmw's.
Neither are bull****ters so that should send you there with a little confidence.
If it does turn out to be a stuffed auto, head down to DTM Auto Transmissions-151 Fyans st, sth Geelong-52221833.
I had some work done there to strengthen the auto in my last Falcon to handle the power output of the motor & they were awesome to deal with, even just as a second opinion.

Thanks Discobaker its good to know it will be in good hands and hopefully I can get this issue sorted without having to take out a new mortgage!!! By the way, if you ever need it, i've got a nanocom here in grovedale, don't have the v8 codes but can look at the rest for you.

Tombie are there any other electrical inputs to the gearbox which would affect shifting in first and second only??

Dropped the car off with Gordon this morning, will just have to wait by the phone and pray that my bank account won't be hit too hard!!
He is going to check over the whole vehicle and give me a list of things that need looking at, hopefully i can do most of them by myself over the next few months.

I will report back on the gearbox issue so hopefully it can help someone out in the future if they get similar symptoms.

Bad news, looks like the Auto has stuffed Clutch packs and from all accounts its cheaper to get a reco trans than try and repair it so i'm up for a new box.
Anyone got any reccomendations for an auto place to get it done at??
I have so far been quoted around $5k fully fitted but I'm sure i've seen others get it done for closer to $3.5k??

Anywhere in Western Melb/Geelong would be fantastic but i'm willing to travel for the right place to make sure its done right.

Rough costs would be handy too if anyone can let me know??

    Cheers,

    Rob
