    Turbo lag with clunky transmission???

Hi everyone, I have a 99 Disco TD5 that is giving me a bit of trouble.
The main problem is the auto transmission which some days works fine, yet other days doesn't want to shift up until significantly over-revving, and also clunks heavily on downshift (I'm talking big scary clunks), less heavily (but still does clunk) on upshift.
On other days it will change between these two ways of operating and back again during the same drive.
Now it seems that the auto problems are also associated with significant "turbo lag?", by that I mean about a 4 to 5 second lag between pressing the accelerator and the engine responding at all. This lag problem also comes and goes. When the lag isn't there the engine really gets up and goes very well, I think it has been chipped because some other Discos have felt underpowerred in comparison.
The three amigos are also on, but I beleive are unrelated.

Now, the thing is, I absolutely love my Disco, even though I've only had it for about a year, but would rather update than spend a gazillion bucks on fixes ( = auto rebuild). Any ideas?

    Hello and welcome...

Unplug the MAF and go for a drive, then come back here and tell us if the vehicle feels like it drives better/worse or the same.

    We will go from there...

Gday Tombie. Righto, with the MAF unplugged, there is no turbo lag, however the power from the engine is not quite as strong as with the MAF plugged in. As for auto shifts, the upshifts are a little abrupt but not too bad, while the downshifts are flawless.
I will leave it unplugged for the next few days and see if there are any intermittent symptoms.
For extra info, I did clean the MAF with contact cleaner about a year ago.
Also, this may be way out of left field, but I have read about earthing problems, some of the LCD readouts on the radio will disapear / reappear on a random basis???

Update. Transmission problem remains as before, although slightly less pronounced.

    Agreed...

And I think you have a MAF that's out of calibration too.
