    Question A matter of diff

Hi all, recently had a rear diff fitted as the old was worn. Now I have oil coming from what can only be the oil seal....is that a safe assumption or is there another possibility?

Since the leak is getting worse and they cannot repair it under warranty for a few weeks I thought I'd top up the oil.....read the rave and found the oil filler plug...silly plastic thing, which will also be replaced.

I undid plug and oil came out...which I though was strange for three reasons.

1 I had raised the rear so thought I would have no oil coming out of the filler plug
2 How did they get oil in above the filler plug?
3 why was the oil a different colour than the stuff on my garage floor?

    Any ideas of wise ones?

Yeah I also thought water got in there, though no idea how as I've not gone swimming since the new diff. As to over filling, how is that done? I changed the diff oil today and hope it will last until I get the oil seal changed....now looking at extending the breather hose...how is that attached? By way of a nipple? Or?

Push fit connector in axle. Just get some 6mm pneumatic hose, pull the old one out, push the new one in and run it wherever you want.

About how much oil came out and what was the colour? The seal might stop leaking with the diff filled to the correct oil level. I'd also check the breather wasn't blocked and causing the diff to over-pressure, although this should be okay if the leak only started after the diff was replaced. I also replaced the plastic plugs for brass ones on ebay - much better.

As soon as i removed the plastic plug the oil ran out and that is after losing 100mls or so on the garage floor at home and probably the same amount at work etc. The colour was a light brown/green colour...the new stuff was like honey. Yes I too have ordered the brass plugs and also will be running a breather extension to the front....good to share experiences.
