    D2 Coolant issues...ADVICE!!!

Gents, advice required..... D2 V8,2000 with 147K..... History... Car been used in the cooler climate for a number of years and no heavy use of aircon... But heavy use of heater.....As a move towards the sun was planned aircon recharged... Historically a very minor coolant leak/ weep on cool down overnight from somewhere on the higher front end... Occasionally leaving a 10 cent size stain...causing a 100ml coolant top up every 5 weeks or so... Car now in the hotter climate and aircon running a lot more on 16 degree auto function..... Noticed what appeared to be coolant working its way down threaded neck of expansion bottle and a minor stain on steering rack..also dribble of oat from expansion overflow... Waited for cool down... No significant drop in coolant bottle but clearly the system had been pressurised.... Gave the rad cap a blast of water clean and replaced... No excessive water out of exhaust noticed and no steam..... Thoughts please... Rad hoses hot at all points when running.....soft in the morning after cool down and no pressure when opening rad cap... Also now seems original coolant weep has stopped since moving to the warmth...

I had a leak from the head gasket as the water galleries are at the front and rear. The drivers side leak was when I removed the alternator bracket I discovered the welsh plug from the drivers side head was weeping. I used about the same amount of coolant as you described.
It was hard to trace until I started pulling stuff of the front of the engine

I am not sure what the answer is except, that a few months ago I noticed a small leak on the top hose, I replaced the top hose, and the leak moved, I replaced the radiator and the leak moved, so I bit the bullet, and replaced everything.

Every hose, the heater matrix, the o-rings, the radiator etc. I did this on Monday, and I have left all the trim off inside underneath the dash as well as engine trim, so that I can observe the hoses over the next few days to make sure all is good.

The benefit of doing this is that I now know all the hoses are sound, and while doing this I was able to see that sometime in the next 12 months I will have to replace the Oil Cooler Housing (pitting on the outlet), and I was able to get a good look in and around the engine.

I used the opportunity to recover the electrical cables with conduit, replace rusted nuts/bolts etc.

So all in all my answer would be, take the time to take off all the engine trim (acoustic covers etc) clean the engine bay, hoses etc thoroughly with a pressure cleaner and degreaser, and then try to trace the leak, and then if it is a hose issue replace them all.

A few months ago I had a similar issue, everybody said it was the head gasket. The expansion bottle blew so I replaced that, still lost fluid. Took it to a radiator place where he said to put in some fluro green coolant. When I did that, we traced the leak to the water pump,, I have replaced that (easy job) and now all good. Saved myself a probable $3000 gasket fix for $300,,

    Hope this helps

Go back and ask if they flushed before replacing with the green coolant. D2's have a OAT coolant speced which is usually red/pink. They definitely don't mix with good results in green. If the green is OAT it's ok else flush again and replace with correct coolant.
