    Grey smoke.

My 02 D2 Td5 187000km has been blowing a biggish cloud of grey blue smoke on start up which may also occur if heavy footed prior to it being warm. The car is running well and performance seems usual. Once warm not a problem.
I am running a remap and egr is blocked is this normal with age?

    Could be serious!!

187K on your TD5 shouldn't be anything to be concerned about as the engine is just getting into its stride.....

What should concern you is possible blown head gasket/cracked head or significant overfuelling from your remapped ECU (White smoke) and burning oil (Blue smoke)

Suggest you monitor oil and coolant levels on a daily basis for the next week or two. Either way, if you are losing oil and/or coolant, you could be up for big $$ for a top-end rebuild

If you have access to a Nanocom, save your modified map and re-install the original fuel map (It should be still stored in the ECU). Not knowing how many kilometres you've been driving on the remapped ECU, go for a drive and see if you are still blowing white smoke....If no white but plenty of blue smoke then it's possible that the over-fuelling has accelerated piston ring wear allowing oil blow-by (Blue smoke) so again, you're going to be up for an engine rebuild.
Not the best news I'm afraid

Head Gasket was replaced 10 thou ago due to a persistent oil leak.

Oil and coolant levels good with no changes and no discoloration.
Seems to be only on start up and when cool i will film and post.

Could it be the turbo bearing seals just starting to weep a little, if it's only at restart and when cold there could be some oil being drawn through the inlet first thing. Is you intercooler clean?

It should be I fitted a D2a intercooler which was clean after egr blank and also the filter which we got on the forum bulk buy that is suppose to keep your intercooler free of oil.

Have you thought that it could just be a glow plug or two. The only have four out of five anyway. If you lift the revs to about1500 straight after start does it miss a little. On very cold mornings mine misses a little even after glow and the unburnt diesel comes out white. This is not that uncommon due to one cylinder already not having the plug.

I'm not familiar with the TD5 engine, but assume it has poppet valve stem seals. Did you replace them when the cylinder head gasket was replaced? If not, this would account for seeing smoke only when cold and no apparent change in oil level.

If you didn't, I'm not sure with this engine if you can remove the valve springs and change the seals in-situ or if you would have to remove the head again. I will leave that to more knowledgeable readers.

    Regards,

    Peter
