    Long range tank

Hi Guys and Girls. Thanks for all the good reads and tips on the web site this last year. It has kept my Disco 2 04 Classic td5 in top nick. Now i have just recieved a long range tank its a Long Range Automotive i think 152 ltrs. Twin tanks. Replacement main and gravity fed rear quarter. Has anyone got any tips to help with the install ? Any words of wisdom would be helpfull. We have just returned home after 8 months of towing our 25ft Jayco arround Aust and i am sick of paying heaps for fuel and fiddling arround with jerry cans so i am going against the advise on the Aulro site and installing a long range tank. We will then test the Disco again next year and see if the money spent was worth it or i was wrong not to take good advise.
Happy Christmas to you all and thanks again for all the info in your posts.
    Regards Steve From Townsville

Put in a longranger 130ltr prior to driving over to Adelaide from Perth for Christmas in my 04 Classic Td5...well worth the effort and bypassed the $1.98 litre on the nullabor

Where did you purchase it from? I was only thinking yesterday that I would like one...

I fitted the same set-up in my D2 when I had it..The side tank is a mission to fit, especially the Tee piece.

dont be stingy on hose clamps, pay the extra and get good clamps that you can do up with a small socket set,, as when they start to leak after a few years you can nip them up easy.

You need to lift up the rear carpet, if I was doing it again, instead of removing the side storage bins, I would just cut the carpet along the edge of the bins,it will save a few hours labour, plus a few plastic clips, and if you use a good stanley knife it wont be noticable.

Also when you do it, sleave your fuel lines to the pump with some conduit or similar, its cheap and easy, and it will stop the lines chafffing thru on the crossmember in the front of the tank..When you drop the original tank you will see what I mean.

If you haven't fitted it by mid january, when I get back to Darwin I still have the fitting instructions, I can send them thru if that will help.

They are well worth the effort, cause the extra range plus no jerry cans is a real bonus.

    Cheers Ean

Leave a lot of time to fit the tank.

The tanks are good but the mounting for the companion tank is a problem.

This mounts using a front and a rear X-member. The front Xmember is fine. The rear is a problem.

This may need a bit of engineering understanding, but the mount for the rear Xmember causes the chassis to crack. If you look at this mount it is designed to hold a plastic and fibre rear bumper, not a heavy companion tank. The mount is welded to the sidewall only of the chassis rail and not the top plate. The loads from the companion tank causes the sidewall of the chassis to flex and this causes it to crack around where the Xmember joins it. In my case I was able to weld the chassis where it cracked, a friend while we were touring the Hay River actually had his companion tank fall out when the rear mount snapped out of the chassis.

When I spoke to LRA they basically didn't want to know about it. In fact they didn't seem to think it was their problem.

The fix (even if you have not cracked the chassis like in my pic) is to weld in the inside top corner of the chassis between the top plate and the sidewall so that the force from the top of the cross member travels into the top plate without the flex in the side wall.

Apart from this, make sure the hoses are all done up tight, they seem to slow leak when full.

    Cheers

You also need to be able to extend the fuel pump float arm. I did this by brazing with an oxy-welder.
