hey guys, i wanted somthing sturdier than the tjm rubbish that was on mine but couldnt afford to go buy some branded item.
so, i looked at a few pics online, got some ideas, and just had a play. this is what i come up with.
rest of the pics are here

@discostu: Man, if only
1) I knew how to weld - and had all the tools
2) had the space for any work area - I live in an apartment with only a open parking spot (hence, no tools/equipment).
3) Win the loto and buy a house with a garage and no nazi body corporate.
But I know I'm not going to buy them from any of the stores. I want practicality. After all, this isn't a shine 'n' show.
@ultradisco: The thumbnails look really good. At the moment, I can seem to get to the larger images (either the service is down or my link is so slow that it keeps asking me for my logon and password - I'll keep trying).
This is all so good. Thank you all.
5mm thick RHS is overkill, 3mm will be fine, it is much lighter and cheaper. I've made mine from 3mm wall and custom made 3mm 'U' brackets that mount snug around the sill, I've never had any complaints and I've sold more than 30 sets to people.
As has been mentioned, don't bother with chassis mounted, they flex too much when you try to use the high lift jack on them due to the large cantilever.
i now personally prefer sill mounted ones as i now have sill ones, i did have chassis mounted tjm steps. but they tended to flex a lot and hit the bodywork anyway, so they were almost pointless. but giving the chassis sits under the car so far it has a lot of leverage on the brackets. the sill mounted ones dont get this much stress on them making them in my opinion stronger.
Mine are sill mounted.
As Hendrik said 3mm is all you will need. Your chassis and cross members arent even that thick! Anything more is just a waste of time, money and sacrifice of weight.
Check out Hendriks "off the shelf" items. He's done all the hard work for you.
heres my own effort http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...2-sliders.html

the tube is 3mm wall 40mm od and the bends are ready bought short radius 90 4mm wall.
before i painted them i held them up where i wanted them with a bottle jack and marked and drilled the slider and sill in one go, did the front and back one, tightened them up then went and did the rest, took them off and painted them. then when they were ready to put on the holes all lined up perfect :)
