In the Book "How to Power tune Rover V8 Engines" by Des Hammill, he estimates that 80% of 4.0 litre blocks suffer cracks and 15% of 4.6 blocks. ref Page 29.
It may not be as high as this but yes LOTS of them fail.

Hi There Ladies & Gents,
Im currently in the market for a new 4x4 and while I was shopping around for a jeep wj I came across a disco 2 and as soon as I sat in it I thought this is what I want. I know they are in need of constant maintenance which dosent bother me as I always keep my cars mechanicly A1 and do 99% of the work myself and Im an old hand with a wrench and or multimeter so trouble shooting wont be an issue, though my main concern is the porus engine blocks in the v8 and was wondering if this flaw is within every disco 8 engine block or there is only a small percentage that have this issue?
all help would be greatly appreciated.
James.
p.s Ive searched for three days in the good oil section but havent come across an answer to my q.

There are many that do high miles and no problems. If they do fail then use the heads grab a 4.6 new cast and live life. Cheers
Where do i grab a 4.6 new cast from.
Ive rebuilt mine 3 times in the last 2 years. Makes me want to get rid of it. And before that i was very happy.

That doesn't make a lot of sense to me! Aren't the blocks identical, the only difference with the 4.6 is the crank and rods?
Why would one be that much worse than the other... amount of heat they produce?
