Would be handy to know what engine you have, Regards Frank.
Well travelling home after a week of fishing and playing in the dunes at Cervantes with campertrailer in tow something happened my oil light came on and a lot of white smoke visible from rear. So I pulled over immediately and popped bonet after removing family from wagon. There seems to be alot of oil front of engine and passenger side of engine. The dipstick still shows just under half full so hopefully no major damage.
But where do I start looking for problem, didnt need this at start of year.
Would be handy to know what engine you have, Regards Frank.
As likely as not a burst oil cooler hose.
You got that right tank I thought it was in my footer notes, it's a 2004 auto 4.6 (yes it's already had an engine swap)
Bee utey yeh good thinking if it starts I might drive up driveway 20m ( the tow truck dropped at bottom) so I can give a degrease and check it out fully.
Do you think it would be safe to do this if engine has oil
That was my thinking, need to clean engine bay to get a real look in there.
update:
I've given the engine a clean and started only for a short time no visible leak however there is slight oil running down front crankshaft seal(remembering not hot yet) there is a lot of chatter coming from the timing cover oil pump area so do not want to run for long.
from this assumption I suspect oil pump, any other suggestions welcome
is there a way to test before removing.
Did you fit one of those Roll Master type timing chains? I had this happen where the link pins on the chain were making contact with the oil pump cover plate and were cutting a groove into it. This was on a D1

NOW WITH PICS:
this is what I found when I took the oil pickup line out and the timing cover off yes the timing cover is cracked. I shut down engine immediately after I seen smoke and oil pressure light on. what other damage is likely to have been done . should i do any thing while timing cover off (timing chain perhaps how much slack should be in chain)
Oh and how does this happen
