and who do you recommend in Perth?
West Coast Rover I hear is the man.
Hi all,
I have a 2001 TD5 Auto (170,000 km). The only problem I have at the moment is a leaky fuel pressure regulator.
How much can I expect to pay to get the following done:
* overhaul brakes - new rotors/pads/flush
* auto transmission service
* fuel pressure regulator replaced
* plastic dowels in head replaced
* power steering pump leak fixed (pump replaced at 90,000km
* oil pump bolt
* head gasket
anything else I should do?
Love this car - but its a cost benefit thing.
and who do you recommend in Perth?
West Coast Rover I hear is the man.
Well I've been an engineer for over 30 years - and can detect BS easily.
Spoke to a few LR mechs over the past few weeks - BS detector went berserk.
Spoke with Franzone today - BS detector completely silent.
Guess who I have taken my beloved Disco 2 to?
Yep - Franzone
Thanks everyone for your advice - I think I made the right choice and saved thousands !
I'm surprised that as a fellow engineer - you haven't done the work yourself and saved thousands........Every one of the tasks you have listed should be well within your capability
Both my Td5 D2's as well as my mate's TD5 Defender and 01 D2 receive all DIY maintenance at home in I admit, my quite well equipped workshop. I buy all filter kits in bulk as well as oil and fluids and save an absolute fortune!
Makes me shudder when I hear horror stories where a local had a recent clutch change and swap over from dual mass flywheel to a solid flywheel and he had to shell out $3700+![]()
Sorry Duchy - been away over in Perth overseeing works on a rather large gas turbine engine in a ship.....
Point I was politley making is that the list of tasks you posted do not require "expert" expertise. I acknowledge that the head removal to replace the dowels may beyond the scope of the average home DIY mechanic but the disc brake replacement, auto trans service etc are very straight forward and are well covered by a Haines manual or RAVE CD for those who want to give it a try.
Oil pump bolt check is a piece of the proverbial - I have it down to 1.5 hours now after doing 4 of them.
Like you I love my Landies and also agree that they are high maintenance - hence my efforts to do nearly everything at home to keep the costs down.
FYI - the clutch job I mentioned should have cost the guy I know around $750 for parts off eBay and a bottle of JD for me to give up a weekend - saving him about $3000. Unfortunately I only heard about it over a beer after the job was done.
No offence meant - just making the point that a vast majority of mechanical work is well within the reach of anyone who knows their way around a tool-box![]()
Just a heads up- this is a cut a paste from a reply of mine to another thread. Do the sums.....
Had a so called "specialist" Land Rover service centre in Perth try to slug me $800 to a grand to change a clutch master and slave on a '96 300Tdi disco today. One that was recommended on here too. Claimed $500 or so in parts and $3-500 in labour.
Told him that I could source the parts locally myself for $270 in three phone calls and could do it myself in under three hours, as a total pleb. If I wanted to wait for parts from the UK it was just over a hunj in parts.
Honestly don't know how some of these plicks lie straight in bed.
