Yep! that's broken, the myth that D2's are invincible, has also been busted.
PM me, if you need information about doing the rebuild.

I have done some searches and found info' about fitting controls to CDL's already fitted but not connected. My 2001 Disco 2 Td5 Auto does not have a CDL. Is it possible to fit the internal CDL components to the transfer case? The D2 has only done 112k and exchanging the TC for a CDL unknown unit is not my first choice.
If this is possible who supplies the parts?
Thanks
Hi Ollie
I am reasonably sure, the only part of your transfer box that is needed to be changed, is the front output housing and along the bits that operate the centre diff lock, I would be keeping the bearings out of the more recent transfer box output housing to reuse in the replacement housing.
All of the parts needed for this modification, can be found in earlier models, have a yarn with your local Land Rover recycler.
I am about to pull a mid D2 transfer box down to rebuild it with parts borrowed from a earlier transfer box, because of those missing parts.
When its built up onto a R380 'L', it will be going into my '96 Defender flat tray

Davis Performance Landys have a kit to reinstall the CDL mechanicals. Check the item under the CDL lever.

Also, if you do decide to replace the transfer case, it needs to be with another one that is from a Disco2 - not any other LT230. The electronics on them are different with the low/high range switch... and they are a quieter box.
Hi Ollie, I had my 02 modified some years back. I had no internals and was lucky being able to source the front output housing and the lever and cable activator from a D2a at a great price. I had them installed so mine is now a factory fit D2a equivalent. I'd looked at using a D1 housing but that doesn't have the hi/lo sensor and wanted a cable connector which is meant to be less noisy than the D1 type.
I wouldn't recommend a lever that only allows locking the diff in low ratio only if you have the option of something else. Good luck with the search
