Slow to change gear and lack of power

    Hi everyone,

I've been reading other threads but cant seem to find what I'm after. Lately my auto td5 (04) has been lacking power and is really slow to change gear. The worst times are when I get to 80kmh and above, it seems to just rev more and more without any real change in speed or apparent power. At the moment, it will rev upto 3500 or 4000 rpm and still only be in 4th doing almost 100kmh, when I fiddle the accelerator it sometimes changes into 5th but not all the time. Its a real struggle to get it to hit 100kmh now. Any hill and it really struggles to maintain serious speed. It also happens around 40-60kmh and struggles to change into a higher gear but it is quite obvious and drawn out above the 80kmh mark.

This is only something quite new. It usually goes quite well with lots of power but something is lacking. For me, it feels like I have put the gear stick at "3" not "D" and I keep subconsciously trying to move it into "D" because it feels pulled back or stuck in gear.

Could this be a MAF issue? I sprayed MAF cleaner on it a few months ago, and there was no difference in the way the car went, and I only sprayed it to ensure it was clean not becuase anything was wrong.

    Any ideas?

You might have trouble getting your 4 speed auto into 5th gear

Unless you mean to lock into 4th when cruising???

When did you last service the auto? Might be worth checking oil level and quality.

It was serviced 10000km ago so I've got it booked into PCB for a service now. It seems to be stayin in gear until almost 4000rpm then it changes to the next gear...it's exacerbated around 80kmh and when I put my foot down it just revs more with very little speed increase and really wants to sit at 80 all day rather than getting upto 110kmh or anywhere near it.

Checked all fluids and they're fine. Oil was a little low and topped it up but all other fluids seem fine.

Gday, we just went through something very similar, and after i cleaned the MAF & the air sensor in the top of the airbox with MAF cleaner (purchased for around $12 at Supercheap) she is running true and sweet, mate give it a try its about 20mins works tops and around $12, if it works on yours very cheap if not you have eliminated 2 things from what can be a list

    Thanks Mark.

I've got it booked into a LR mechanic tomorrow anyway but will try your thoughts tonight. I have cleaned the MAF before but not the other air intake sensor thingy so I'll have a play. I have maf cleaner that's newish so I'll try and hope for the best.

Cos I'm a little mechanically challenged, can you give me any hints on where the air intake sensor is? Is it in the box with the air filter? Is there something also in the MAF box I need to spray other than the actual sensor?

Have you gone to Justinc yet? If so, did he give you any further advice or suggestions????

I've just finished reading your whole thread on your power issues too, so very helpful thanks!

Ill be sure to post my outcomes, hopefully all good like yours!

Ok undo the 2 clips that hold the airbox lid on, 1 is nearly next to the ABS modual and the other is under/beside the top radiator hose, when you undo this 1 next to the rad hose you will notice an attachment with a wire connector this is the sensor, when you lift the lid off you will see it on the inside, i just gave it a real good spray, left sit for 10 then put it all back together, just be aware of what appears to be a vacum line in the same spot on the outside make sure it is firmly attatched when all back together.

Hope this helps as i can not take a pic as Debs at ZOOOOOMMMBBBBBA and took the disco.

No mate i have not taken her to Justin yet, after the financial hit of the startermotor and a few electrical appliances in the house we will have to save a little for a couple of weeks then will book in with him. After Justin, Yorkshire Jon and Greame all saying it was all pointing to the side of things mate what can you say there advise it to be commended

Make sure you unclip and clean the electrical plug on the top of the MAF as well - mine had oil on the terminals somehow!!??

Yeah, I noticed that too. I've had to replace a split turbo hose, so I assumed that it came from there. Maybe its more common than I thought. If you've got poor connections there it might cause the same issues as a faulty MAF.

Mine had similar issues after a BHG (V8 though) the MAF filled up with oil/water and despite cleaning would only get to third then get a fist full of revs and not up shift, or under load surge and carry on. Turns out when it fails it tell ECU there's not air so it doesn't add fuel but the O2 sensors say there's unburnt O2 so it adds fuel and plays with timing etc. Not sure of the effect with diesel but a new maf remedied mine.
