    Chipping

I am considering chipping my Disco Td5 for an increase in general drivability. Most up-graders recommend a larger intercooler however, my machanic advised that for the extra cost, (abt $1,000) the larger intercooler fails the cost benefit analysis. Does anybody know the performance difference between just a chipped and chipped with larger intercooler Disco 2?

See previous post/s where if you have a D2a, they already come with a larger intercooler, so very limited improvement. I'm assuming you are already looking at the other performance enhancement options to go with the chipping.

This is only the case for fitting a D2a intercooler to a D2 in standard trim.

While the D2a has slightly larger intercooler than an early D2, a larger cooler WITH a chip will make a huge difference to either model. But you dont just throw in a bigger cooler. Increase in boost is required to get the best from such an upgrade.

If you are upgrading the map via chip or remap fit an EGT/ Pyrometer at the same time as an absolute minimum. Chip, EGT and Intercooler is the smart and superior package.

Do not believe any stories of retaining factory EGT's, no matter who is selling you the upgrade. If you regularly "use" all the performance of the chip you will regularly exceed healthy EGT's in some circumstances and prolonged high EGT's will terminate your turbo, head......motor, at best shorten its life considerably.

my machanic advised that for the extra cost, (abt $1,000) the larger intercooler fails the cost benefit analysis.
If you believe the intercooler fails the cost benefit analysis i respectfully suggest you abandon the idea of an ECU remap all together. Your mechanic is a womble.

My Intercooler from TD5 Alive and boost box has shaved up to 150 degrees from EGT's in most circumstances and is the best addition to the chip. It makes the power useable at the upper end of the driving range (why the chip was done) instead of the EGT alarm going off every time I overtake with a good load on.
IMO never fit a chip to TD5 without the intercooler upgrade.

Plenty of posts on here about this subject. Here is some info to get you started http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-...alive-i-c.html

Hi Strangy. Thanks for the clarification. Would you happen to recall an indicative cost of the TD5 Alive intercooler? I suspect cost delivered to Perth would not be that much different. Cheers

Yep, Boost Box and Intercooler was 625 GBP to my door.
It took 5 days to get here from ordering. (just as fast or faster as from ordering here).

    cheers

I have a 2003 DIIa with stage 2 remap and a boost box. Running about 19-20 psi. I have not upgraded my intercooler and pulls like a freight train. I don't think any more power is needed with the intercooler expense as I dont want to punish my auto along with the rest of the engine / driveline.

Sky is the limit if you want more power but other things may suffer. Mine is the family wagon so needs to remain reliable.

But EGT are the critical issue when you remap ... And a stg2 remap will up EGT ... So the I/C upgrade is used to help lower the EGT ... Do you know what your EGT is ?
